Mud flaps on wrong way round

When did the current “trend” of putting mud flaps on the wrong side of the wheels start? Is it just me that thinks it looks utterly stupid?

they’ve been at it since the late seventies rob :open_mouth:

I think it looks quite smart.

it’s to stop the blood from cyclists splashing onto the paintwork!

There were some on my Premium when I bought it. They got taken straight off. I think they look daft too.

Paul

Our lot’ve done it on and off; This heap pictured mid '90s (probably doubled it’s value, lorry had gone before I was old enough to drive but Dad and others reckon I missed nothing)

What is the point? They get ripped off on rough ground…More BS

spanials ears.

Rob it looks like your pics are taken at a truck show for that ok but not on the road

They would be better on the steps going into truck for wiping your feet on to keep so of the dirt out of the cab :sunglasses:

it does look daft but also smart

rob k you at the truckfest?

looks mega sweeeeeeeeeeet :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses: im getting some for mine soon

How the ■■■■ can it look “smart” and “mega sweet” and other such ridiculous comments? They have about the same use as putting the 5th wheel on backwards. Mud flaps are designed to stop mud so unless you do a lot of very fast speeds in reverse they are completely pointless. If you want people to know you’re driving a Volvo that much, why not just stick a couple of ■■■■■■■ Volvo decals on the bottom corners of the front bumper? At least that way you won’t look a ■■■■ and you won’t be losing 1 mpg in consumption from the drag either.

Why are all truckers thick as ■■■■? In all the time I’ve been driving them I can recall about 3 that actually had some intelligence. The rest were as stupid as these ■■■■■■■■ who don’t know where a mud flap should be mounted. Perhaps they should read the instructions that they come with. :bulb:

putting a 5th wheel on backwards would stop the trailer from falling off.

wow!! 1 mpg from mud flaps :open_mouth: add some spots and we must be doing 0 mpg i guess   they look nice … doesn’t have to be practical does it??

Well, to answer your question. It started in the States when bonnet over trucks like W Series Kenworths and R Series Macks, (see below) had quite thin front bumpers and when used on roads that had deep, water filled potholes, the “reverse mudflaps” reduced the amount of mud and muck coming up over the lights and front of the truck.

There are plenty of web links to trucks of that era, showing where the trend started, and if you’ve never driven in those conditions without a set of “reverse mudflaps” you won’t know how frustrating it is to constantly have to get out and scrape off the muck that has been virtually welded onto your hot headlights.

That said, there’s not many bonnet over trucks operating in the UK these days, and even the manufacturers of “bonnet over” trucks have now started to fit much deeper front bumpers, (see the lower Kenworth pic below) so the need for “reverse mudflaps” has now all but disappeared.

Except that they have become a visual accessory, much like the massive, low mounted light bars that seem to be popular as well, and “appear” to have a family resemblance to Aussie bull bars, but are only serious protection against flies! (And cyclists!)

P.S. The lower picture looks very much like a show truck with an Austrian registration! (Discuss!)

… or those that don’t know why they’ve been fitted the “wrong” way round in the first place!

Must be a “quiet news day” :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:

How fast does it go mister?

i think they look nice tbh each to their own…
