Motorway services in Wales

Probably a stupid question.
Why are they all situated off a junction and not served by a dedicated slip road from the motorway ?

Good question, the only reason I can think of is that it’s a relatively short stretch of motorway for the amount of services (6) so it saves on having more junctions.

The reason I ask, is because I actually travelled out of my comfort zone yesterday, for the first time in years and took a 15 and a 30 at Swansea west …nice.

I imagine that they forgot to build them.

My guess would be that when they were built there wasn’t enough traffic to justify having a service area on each side of the motorway.

Doesn’t the M25 have a similar set up.

Apparently after the Welsh assembly paid for the road signs containing 320 letters for the
Welsh equivalent of services there was unfortunately no money left to build purpose built slip roads for them so they cobbled them onto existing junctions.

A local subway has the Welsh translation “Ffordd-dan-ddaear”. That is a subway under a road not a food shop.

All the official paperwork is in two languages rather than ask your preference and save millions of pounds in waste paper.

Could be right there Harry I remember when it was 2 lanes all the way from Aust to Pont Abraham.
Actually didn’t the motorway end by Port Talbot ?

I can remember that as well, also remember when the M5 was 2 lanes from Strensham to just south of brum.

And Harry could probably remember when there was no M4 there

From what I remember this would be ‘Magor’ services ?
I went there a few times, I can’t remember the layout but I do know it was the first time I ever experienced ‘Wendy’s’ burgers and found them total crap. I moved to the USA and thought maybe I should try them over here, after all it is an American company and they must be better in the country they originate ? … Wrong ! … Still crap

I can remember when the M4 finished at Maidenhead at the London end and was two lane after junction 5 I recall. I first drove the length of it in 1973 and I am sure there were bits missing and I used the A48 in those places.

I remember watching the M5 Avonmouth Bridge going as I was at primary school right by it and we went for a couple of school trips on it once when there was a gap in the middle before both sides met.

I also remember going on a family holiday to Cornwall pre M5 days and we followed the A38 all the way and took us 9 hrs from Bristol, Dad and I still talk about it today .

:open_mouth: :open_mouth: It don’t take that long to get to Glasgow from Southampton now when M6 behaves it self
