I can well imagine that leylandlover and his fellow attendees were told EXACTLY who was paying for their course. Explained in great detail, no doubt, by the big man with the cigar
Saviem,
You never know what is going to come around the corner. You owning a truck I drove ,all be it briefly, some 40 odd years ago. Somewhere I have a photo of the pupils of the course I attended gathered round and on the said truck, complete with trailer loaded with 18t of concrete blocks, which just had the effect of making it ride better ,the weight didn’t slow it down.
On following courses I wasn’t so fortunate, BMC Mastiff or possibly a Boxer, the vehicle wasn’t important to the content of the course, but I would have loved another session on that Viewline.
Dennis, as ll says quite a few of us were aware who had in a roundabout way ,funded the courses we were attending. I cannot recall any of the staff enlarging on who paid for what, they did a good job imparting their knowledge to those of us who were willing to learn, and a lot of the pupils were like me, drivers from firms countrywide who also were prepared to learn from each other.
From what I remember of haulage at that time ,firms with the capabilities to train their own staff were few and far apart, so if your company was doing that it was setting an example that should have been followed. But the greater majority of us worked for company’s that weren’t as forward thinking and we took the opportunities as and where they arose and should take credit for doing so.
Cheers Bassman
leylandlover:
Actually Bewick,We did know who paid for the courses,We were told by the instructors and Richard Read.
Yes we were also told how the courses were funded
Hiya Bassman,I fully understand your perspective on the RTITB and I am not for a minute berating those lads/students that attended the various courses at either MOTEC centre. However, what I was agrieved about was the way the RTITB were funded which was basically a blanket imposed levy on,as “Saviem” quite rightly points out,a hard pressed industry that was feeling the effects of carrier licence deregulation. Therefore,in my personal opinion it was nothing more than a “government sponsered rip off” and we had no choice we were forced to pay.At Bewick Transport we did, indeed, look after our employees as well as we possibly could as we much preferred a happy, settled, workforce which resulted in our average lengths of employee service been far in excess of the industry norm over the years we operated.Your old CB hobbo “Dusty” for example,he had over 20 years in at the time I left the WRM group! We certainly didn’t require any un-welcome “help” to train our employees or assistance to re-train new starters into our way of working.I certainly was ecstatict when the RTITB levy got the “heave ho” YES!!! Cheers Dennis.
Dennis,
I think to some extent we’re both on the same playing field now! But it did provide a lot of people with opportunities they otherwise wouldn’t have had.
Cheers Bassman

Well kick that rugby ball off the park,we’re playing football !
Cheers Dennis.
It was a shock to me that we had to pay the first year’s levy, and although it was a disgrace it was introduced in the first place I made sure we never did again. I am explaining on the W.H.Williams thread what we did as I think it is more suitable there as it is specific for us and the Darlington area.
However no haulier needed to pay the levy, did as we always had in our own way, ‘On the job training’ A block grant was available for this which was set against the levy. However by tweeting the system I was able to get full exemption from the levy and get grants for training of HGV drivers and apprentice mechanics, which not only covered the cost of training but also wages and management costs. As I said before if you can’t beat them, join them! Or at least let them think you have.
Well done, Carl! I’m certain that many other companies went down the same road as we did, but it was a right pain to jump through all the hurdles that they put in your way.
This was taken at MOTEC Livingston about 1972/73 at the end of a 10 day welding course. The fella on the left was the instructor and was from Australia, I am the good looking one on the right and the lad in the middle came from the north of Scotland. I think his name was Donny ■■?
Glad I’m not the only one on here that went to Livingston for training, looking back it was a great place to go just a shame this tread get spoilt by the whinging levy merchants!
By the nature of your comment T1 it is obvious you haven’t got a clue what your talking about, answer me two questions,a)How many drivers did you employ during the time the RTITB were inflicted on hard working hauliers? b) And how much levy did you pay during that period.?The RTITB was nothing less than a Politically motivated wheeze forced upon the industry by the, then,Labour government of Harold Wilson, who incidentally hated private hauliers and would have had everything BRS if they could have managed it.Also the RTITB was staffed by a bunch of “jobsworth” ■■■■■■■ who would have had great difficulty holding down a job in the real world! Bloody right I was a WLM if thats how you describe the poor buggers who neither wanted or needed the RTITB in the first place but were still forced to pay a 1% Levy on their payroll. So I would suggest you check both sides of the argument before branding the actual people who funded the Scam as WLM’s.Cheers Bewick.
Please read what I put again Mr Bewick are you sure that is your final answer ? Or would you like to try again ?

I’m not a mind reader T1,and I’m not going to repeat my-self,thats my opinion of the RTITB fiasco and I’m sure I’m not the only retired haulier to hold this opinion.Cheers Bewick.
Evening Gentlemen,
MOTEC great courses, great “craic”… no doubt whatsoever… the idea was sound…but its execution was chronic! As a direct comparison look at what is happening to our noble Farrier`s today, via that incompetent enclave OFSTEAD.
but Bewick is totally correct , take off your rose tinted shades, and just look at the “political” penalties that have been thrust on our “private” haulage enterprises…tax…tax…tax…control…control…control
And that Gentlemen is why the UK hire and reward industry is as it is…no earnings…no real profit… a “mature” industry…(meaning that it is dead in the water in terms of potential growth and reward) and if you doubt my words then lay across any companys accounts the cold, oh so cold steel, of that measure of real business…the return on capital employed!! (Perhaps for those with time on their hands they should start with those ■■■■■■■■ TV personalities!!..but to give them credit they alone have given the industry the true face that it deserved, shame about those who worked so hard, for so little, and then were forced out of the industry.
It will be quite a surprise to those who have never done it…
Look forward to counting the LT,LV, PL, RO, BU, plates on the vehicles you see…for they play to a different interpretation of our all pervading European Union and its rules and dictates…
Happy New Year my friends…

The Gentleman from the “Top of the Mountain” has handed down the “tablet” which suitably, and correctly, explains the postion. Happy New Year to all our readers,Bewick.
Now that does surprise me your not a mind reader ! My point was the thread is MOTEC High Ercall not RTITB levy so why not start one and let people who have there own opinion on MOTEC and the good things it did post without be jump on by the WLM and then be told they haven’t got a clue what there talking about !

Look T1,the RTITB and the two MOTECS were one and the same thing so why has there got to be two threads? Why not keep the crap on one thread, surely this is much the tidier option,I’m not bothered in the slightest if you choose to sound off about how wonderful the MOTEC was, although as far I was,and am,concerned they were as I described in my previous post and I will continue to promote my opinion when the subject is aired Bewick.
Hope you have a happy new year Dennis aka WLM think your to old to take them blinkers off !
I wish that I had not started this topic BTW Bewick the staff who trained me were not jobs worth. As I said I went on four courses and learned something new on every one.
