Hi Nick I’m stunned reading this ! I can’t believe that some a*****e done that, it was such a great weekend too, I left personal gear under my table but reading this I dought if I ever will again ! I do wish you luck Nick in a safe return but like MarkR said you’ll prob not see it again so sad mate.
Good luck Nick
That’s bad, what a low life. Like most people that build models it’s usually a very personal subject that you choose to build for a specific set of circumstances: A bad end to a good day.
I know there are few model builders ( myself included ) that have had bad experiences at model shows. The main thing to remember it that most people are there for a very good reason.
Hi, thanks for the tips everyone re: chroming. I’m happy with the front bumper as it stands I think, it’s got sufficient shine without looking too plasticky or fake.
I’ve got a few small issues with the cab to resolve, just tidying up around the edges really. I’m struggling for time these days but when I do turn my hand to it I don’t want to end up rushing it!
I wanted to have it finished for gaydon and maybe attend but it was my wife’s birthday at weekend so I knew it was out!
I can’t understand why some oxygen thief would attend what is a specialist show event, weigh up someone’s hard work and then walk off with someone’s fully built model off their display table!
How was this vermin not caught in the act!?
So I read that Truck Model World magazine has another publisher and its future looked a little uncertain for a while, I had been a subscriber of the mag since its first issue and have everyone until I gave up a couple of years ago. The magazine is a must for modellers as a good read and a source of what is new on the market as well as seeing some excellent builds, it has though been at the forefront along with the Editor Peter White of pioneering Truck Modelling to not only this country but to many overseas countries and modellers, apart from odd articles in real life Truck mags this magazine was the first in Britain to solely concentrate on Commercial Vehicles in model form.
It is good that a new publisher has been found making this the third time this has happened in the magazines history, the previous time caused concern too but also led to the Forum which again built up a large members list. However if the Forum is to continue it will have to be a new set up as Traplet operate the present one and I can’t see them letting it continue when they won’t publish the magazine anymore so hopefully a change here won’t hurt membership too much. I gave up the mag and truck modelling because I found there was little interest in my era of models from the 60’s/70’s, the magazine represented this too with fewer and fewer articles being about Classic vehicles with members of both the mag and Forum preferring modern types, understandable as the age of modellers changed. Kits of older vehicles reduced too so it would be mostly down to scratchbuilding to turn out replicas of vehicles I preferred, something I once done quite a bit of but now find little time to do, I decided to go back to military subjects where there is an abundance of kits, information and expertise.
I hope things will go on as before for Truck Model World but it seems publishers may just find this a subject that does not have a huge following like the other branches of the hobby and may only give it a certain period before deciding it is not worth continuing. It does depend on members contributions, I done several articles, which I was well paid for, but it seems the Editor struggles to attract people to write in, despite these same people putting many pics on the Forum or sites like this, it would be a shame to lose it not so much for me thesedays but for newer modellers to the scene. Knowing Peter White well he will do his best to keep things going but he won’t be there forever and he does need others to help and contribute, good luck for the future.
Well said Frank, I always enjoyed your posts on the forum and the articles you did for the mag. Concerning the Mag,I was at 2 heads I wanted to keep my subscription going but the local news agent also gets the mag monthly and I was wanting to support him. The price was exactly the same so I couldn’t see the difference. After my sub finished I just picked it up in the news agent.
I used to build in my spare time, but now my son ( who was quite happy playing with Lego ) is older, so that time ( modelling ) is now spent playing outside soccer, bike riding, etc.
I’ve had a model on the bench for 9 months now, I just don’t get the time any more.
Some very good points made there chaps, all we can do is carry on supporting the truck modelling world,
Mind you I take way too long to finish builds off.
I hope you manage to carry on jeff, I really like your model making and articles, time is always against you I agree! Especially with young ones around!

You may think you take to long but then you know your doing it right sure your getting close. are you making a trailer for that volvo
TORUN:
irish lorries any news on you starting your build yet, jeff you can always make time for a little bit of modelling the young lad has to sleep sometime
I’m having bother with my air brush and I haven’t had time to go buy a 143 model kit
I still get 2 or 3 hours a week, nothing like the time I used to get, but I still enjoy my time doing it.
I’ve gone back to building for enjoyment, when I look at them I remember the good time I had driving in their era and the good mates I made. I know a lot of guys that build for competitions and add detail every where.
The closest show for me is over in Victoria, and that would involve either a 2 day drive + a 16 hour expensive ferry ride to get there and the same coming back. I wouldn’t try and take any of them on a plane again, the last time I did that I had an Astran Scania as carry on and the security wanted to cut it up to have a look, so I refused to fly and went home. I don’t fancy packing it in a suit case and getting it chucked about by baggage handlers either. Now my models never leave the house and most of the visitors we get don’t give them more than a passing glance. I have a few that are fully detailed inside the cab and under the chassis, but they sit high on a shelf and I just enjoy looking at them. For me adding an extra 200 hours doing stuff I’ll never see again doesn’t make sense.
Most of the super detailed models I had got destroyed in a fire a few years back and that’s a bit off putting as well, some of the builds I was doing turned out to be a bit of chore and I was getting reluctant to finish them. So I went back to building for enjoyment…
Hi Jeff I know what you mean about detail, Charles Traces F10 that he’s recently completed fantastic, I was watching the detail that Charles put into that it was mind boggling ! Well to me it was, and I love Charles’s builds, and I saw it at Gaydon and it’s a fantastic looking build, I don’t think I could turn out such quality as much as I like building them, cos you just dont see to much of it when the cabs down.
When I look at a photo of something I’m gonna build I like to consentrate more on what the eye will see rather than what it won’t see, and as you can see with my builds now I do like a bit of weathering that in my eyes makes a model more realistic, as for the engines I’ll leave em alone BUT if the back of the engine can be seen as on the Oryx I’ve just done I’ ll put in the fuel filters that are on the back of the engine if you can see a part of the gearbox I’ll detail just that. I always built trailers out of the box but recently I’ve started using Resin wheel cos that’s on e of the first things that hits the eye, but then again I’ve only been building for three and half years, maybe in time I’ll end up putting more and more detail in ! It early days for me but I don’t think I will when the models on its base and the lids on you see’s what you see’s.
One thing I did learn from Charles and I should have known better that all trailers have a ratchet hand brake none of mine have a detail that the eye should see
Now I’ve given more of me secrets away I’m offski
Regards Jimski
Hi, yes I’m doing a trailer for the volvo Irish lorries.
It is a tilt loosely based on the one in the article in trucking international which was behind the volvo. I have started to make a foil tilt, I’ve added the boards and have plans to make the trailer ‘open’ with a transparent roof built into the tilt cover. It’s not been touched for a good while though!
It’ll be done not long after the unit is finished.

Thanks Jim, I’ll have a look for one of those. I like the old flat tops, I used to have one and it was a scruffy old thing, so if I do make a balls up of it that could make it more realistic
