Mobile phone

Steer clear of the Chinese crap, they might make a decent fridge or washing machine nowadays, but when it comes to phones you’re better off getting one from the civilised world.

Galaxy s2. No complaints. Battery life good. Been dropped, stood on etc (do have a rubber protector on it). Easy to use.

Our works galaxys, original version, have flown through 2 years of abuse without an issue on any of them.

The one in the pic is just my back up phone, my main one is a very old Nokia 6230i. Everybody I know who has a state-of-the-art all-singing all-dancing phone complains that they keep getting cut off, losing the signal etc etc. My Nokia makes and receives calls and texts and that’t pretty much all I want it to do.

Like the keyring phone though!

Yeah looks pretty good I dunno if they be much cop

I end up carrying 2 phones - my own and a work one. Both have been changed recently.

Own phone; old = HTC Desire, new = iPhone 4S

Work phone; old Blackberry Bold 9700, new = Samsung Galaxy S3

Prior to the HTC Desire I had an iPhone 3 which never gave me any problems. When it was ‘upgrade time’ I bought into the spin of HTC and the Android OS. TBH I never really rated the HTC, then when it started getting ‘full memory’ and freezing issues (when in fact another screen would confirm that there was very little stored on the phone) I knew I would be going back to an iPhone. The fact that only £10 per month more than I was previously paying got me an iPad 3 as well, was a bonus as I was looking to replace my original iPad anyway!

As a business phone the Blackberry was OK. Unfortunately, it too was suffering from a hard working life and was ready to be replaced as soon as it was due. I was given total free reign to choose my new work phone so went with the general ‘spin’ that said the Samsung Galaxy S3 was the greatest (smart)phone ever!! What I can say is that the display is excellent on the Galaxy S3, as is the video camera/still camera. Size wise it can be a bit awkward to use one-handed and it’s ‘home page’ and ‘tabs’ system is confusing and crap.

The worst thing about the Galaxy S3, much worse than any of the others I have mentioned above, is the text input. It is truly utter crap!! For example, the iPhone remembers if you use a word that is not in its dictionary after the first time. The Galaxy NEVER remembers this and often changes words to something so way-off your intended word that it is a) a right PITA and, b) very embarrassing if you send without proof-reading your text first. This morning I sent a text that included ‘Buckingham Palace’ but forgot to proof-read it. What it actually sent was ‘Birmingham Palace’!! WTF??!! It’s nothing like!! This is just one example - it happens numerous times per day and as a business phone, it’s not acceptable. Unfortunately I am now stuck with it :imp:

So, in summary . . . .

iPhone 3 - a bit dated and restricted now but was quite a solid platform.
HTC Desire - not as good as the iPhone 3, even though it was much newer, and too problematic.
Blackberry Bold - good and solid performer until it became a bit too ‘old and worn out’.
iPhone 4S - very good at what it does, easy to use, a good size, I have no battery problems.
Galaxy 3S - mostly good but it’s one fault is such a PITA that it spoils the rest of the package.

Marks out of 10 . . . .

iPhone 3 - 8/10
HTC Desire - 7/10
Blackberry Bold - 7.5/10
iPhone 4S - 9/10
Galaxy 3S - 5/10

LG Optimus One P500 - does everything I want. Only niggle is that the bluetooth volume is a bit low. Otherwise as good as my lad’s I-phone 4 and I don’t have Apple taking over my computer, phone, laptop and any other technology I might have.

Sent from my desktop computer using Ubuntu Linux 12.04

Try installing “swift key 3” keyboard on the galaxy. The stock keyboard is useless I agree. I find swift key far better for predicting words.
I have a Samsung galaxy s2 and find it brilliant. So much so that I leave the laptop at home.

just got the galaxy s3 no problems so far

also have a sony erricson w995 mainly because am greedy

Some iPhones are manufactured in China but they are all designed in California. If a BMW 5-Series is manufactured in China, does that make it a Chinese car or is it still a German car?

I hope this helps.

Harry Monk, thank you for your slightly unnerving PM on this subject. I can’t reply even if I wanted to. I appreciate you taking the time to write it, but can I suggest you take a little time away from TruckNet as it clearly seems to be the main focus of your life. Don’t take things so seriously, old boy.

I hope this helps.

.

well the BMW Z4 is only built in America making it a Zee 4.

But would you say the BMW Z4 was an American car or a German car?

If you’d ever driven a BMW built in the states you’d know it makes the world of difference

I hope this helps :grimacing:

The main focuses of my life are my children, my business and my truck, in that order.

Here’s a little tip. Repeatedly saying “I hope this helps” isn’t a “debate winner”. It just makes you look like a gibbering idiot.

Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou, JB!! :sunglasses:

That keyboard has transformed the Galaxy S3!! It still doesn’t beat my iPhone 4S but isn’t too far behind now! :grimacing:

Iphones are rubbish, the Samsung Galaxy destroys it.
I have an iphone 4 aswell, rubbish batter life, freezes alot and has a mind of its own

iPhone 4 freezes because it only has a single core processor. The 4S sports a dual core processor and does not crash anywhere near as much. Battery life for both is crap. Apparently the iPhone 5 will have better battery performance and iOS 6 is rumored to have battery saving features.

It’s a shame that apple still have not sorted the battery life issues to an acceptable standard as other manufacturers have done.

My iPhone 4S has never froze! I find the battery life okay - I certainly get a full day from it between charges. It definately lasts longer than the Galaxy S3!!

My Galaxy S3 usually requires a re-boot every other day or so due to freezing or just generally not responding. I’m also having signal strength issues with it. All of our work phones are on a Vodafone business tariff. Quite often there will be three of us at the same location/meeting; one has an iPhone 4S, I have the Galaxy and the other person still has one of our Blackberry’s. I can often be on 1 bar or less of signal (of 5 bars) while the other two are on either 4 or 5 bars, certainly never less than 3!! I thought my phone might be a dud but at a recent conference a couple of other people with the same phone also mentioned poor signal issues.

Overall, the iPhone 4S still kicks arse (and trust me, I don’t particularly like the whole ‘Apple/iTunes’ thing!).
