As people who frequent the Law and Order section of the site will know, I am looking at redundancy at the end of the month. Which is good, because if I had to spend much longer in the company of our contract supervisor, I would be looking at 30 years to life, (and this bloke is like Evander Holyfield, in looks and build!). So, I have been looking around and one of our colleagues recently defected to a fine purveyor of Mobile Carparks, otherwise known as T+E 11+ transporters.
I have an interview and loading assessment arranged for Monday afternoon.
What do I need to know? I have been doing general haulage for the past year, in a Renault Premium with a curtain side trailer. Aside from the obvious things:
1 Don’t wake up too quick or you will crack your head on the roof.
2 Don’t try to do the curtains up, you will look like an idiot.
3 When you get to the top of the cab, don’t keep going backwards, you will be looking for a new job.
4 The final step before putting all the decks down is to check there is not a £50k SUV hiding behind the cab.
This is what I know. What else do I need to think about?

You will be wearing a green uniform when ESL buys your company out.

Best of luck to you.
If my old company, (Norbert DingleDangle) doesn’t get there first.
I’ve only ever done 6 car rigid transporters but . . . in a world where common sense is becoming quite rare, you’re going to need bags & bags of it.
The first time you reverse a car over the cab, especially if the deck is a bit icy & the wind is blowing, you need to be thinking that everything else is going to be easy after this
shytalk:
I dont think they will throw you in at the deep end…its not in there interest…good luck with the job.
They wont, there is a two week intensive training thing if I get the gig. I was just hoping for some info on here so I dont go asking the stupid questions on monday.
Thats not bad then some only give you a weeks training…long hours but good money, give it a whirl you mite take to it like a duck to water, all the best…shytalk.

Forget everything you already know apart from vehicle controls. They won’t mind stupid questions, they will like someone who wants to learn, they will like someone who’s interested in more than just a wage packet. They will be less impressed if you try to show a knowledge that you don’t have as they will spot it.
The fact you have a loading assesment give me a clue as to who its for, driving a car in a straight line is harder than you think. Try finding an empty car park and reverse your car down a white line whilst leaning out of the window, you’ll thank me for it on monday. Don’t hang yourself up on a thought that you could back over the front of the Transporter, you won’t(unless your a proper plonker), you do need some momentum to get the cars up but they won’t expect you to get it perfect.
Listen to what they say and prove to them you listened.
If any of that helps you get the job I accept all gifts of Chocolate or Cider or both, good luck.

With any job, if you’ve got a question, stupid or not, ask it. You’ll look a ■■■■ site more stupid if you didn’t ask and then ■■■■■■ up
That thread is an example of how the internet should work!
Thanks to all the guys in here, you have also been very helpful. Its Paragon I am going to, anyone driven for them?

Don’t expect big money straight away, lots of hire car work doing airports and expect plenty of London work ( victoria, marble arch etc). They also do garage deliveries with used cars. You’ll earn well if your happy to graft. Most trucks are having trackers fitted and you’ll have to use a PDA for delivery signatures. The trainer is easy going as long as he has a brew in his hand.
Dont go in with a little knlowledge as you will be sussed out. As for tips ensure you have a good head for heights ( dont be scared to hold on for dear life, believe me you will have to in situations )
if you want to know then ASK THE TRAINER not the other drivers, its not in their interest for you to fail, the training is an expensive part of the business but it is essential.
If the TRAINER tells you to do it a certain way then make sure that is the way you do it (if not it will bite you in the bum)
Other than that make sure you keep your sense of humour as you will need it at times.
Not quite as high as a mobile car park, but still makes me nervous when I have to load or unload it.
No handbrake, No Clutch pedal and not designed for slow controlled maneuvering and only just fits into the back of that truck. It’s a bit of a balancing act between accelerator and brake pedals.

That looks like a simulation of loading HELL. I watched the Neil Garner boys struggle with their M900R at Donington Park the other month, that looked expensive if they got it wrong.

Is that the GT4 or the N24?
It’s a GT4 Vantage with Paddle Shift, it’s far easier to load into the Artic than the rigid. Gets used more for exhibition and promo work than racing these days. This picture was taken delivering to Tunbridge Wells for a website launch.

Its a nice car, didn’t it race in GT4 Europe back in 2010? If so I may have a photo or two of it. You want to bring that with the MX-5s to Britcar next year!

This isn’t the one we raced in 2010, we still have it but it’s owned by somebody else so it doesn’t get used for this type of thing. Both of them were in the Le Mans 24hr support race this year.
Didn’t do Britcar with the MX5 this year moved up to British GT, with mixed results. Hopefully the MX5 will be back in British GT next year. It’s great looks a real beast now, I think they’ve got something like 350bhp out of it.
