It’s a late reg Atky to be still shod on 1000X 20 wheels! and would that sleeper conversion be a Nightingale one(an Atky subsiduary)■■ Cheers Bewick.
evening Dennis,i Have a very similar unit ex taberns but with the mk2 cab silver knight.will get some decent quality pics and post them this week,127000 miles from new, garaged every night, just crying out for 20 ton of pulp for aberdeen!!!
Bewick:
This was a nice little tractor that I bought secondhand to shunt locally but it was often drafted in to do change overs and the odd job when we were under pressure! It was ex Pickford Tank Haulage and had spent it’s entire life running into Manchester Airport with Av Gas from BP Partington. It was a smooth runner 150 LX/6spd DB/Kirkstall BDR.I re-call one night when it ran down to Tubby’s at Crick on a C/O,20 ton both ways and when I filled it up in the morning it took 39 gallon, unbeatable economy that was at the time!!

Hiya “Atkiman” sounds like you’ve got a “little gem” as my old pal Malcolm Woodhouse Snr. would say!!! Tabern’s ran out of St.Helens with glass didn’t they? Red with white roofs, similar to Bewick colours IIRC.Can’t wait to see the shots and what spec was the tractor? Cheers Dennis.
Atki spec is 6lxb 180,6sp d/b kirkstall overhead worm axle,no power steering, was a breakdown for 20 years before i got my hands on it,i think its pictured in this guise elsewhere on this thread.Had to myther tim tabern for years until he gave in and agreed to sell it to me.

So “Atkiman” it would be the same chassis spec as the Bewick Mk1 but with the Mk 2 cab! I re-call John McGuffie had one with same spec in around 1970 can’t remember if it had P/steering,probably not! He bought it new off Grahams of Bass Lake prior to Scotts of Nottingham becoming Atki distributors for ■■■■■■■ in 71.Useless info I know but it keeps the brain ticking!! Cheers Dennis.

Spot on that shot ,just as I remember them! I bet the little fella got a rude awakening when you set off!! They were somewhat a “solid” ride not coupled to a loaded trailer!!! Cheers Dennis.

Yes Dennis, it is a Nightingale sleeper - they were built for Atkinson Vehicles (London) by Ellis & Son of Five Oaks Green in Kent

This picture is from 1971, note the Easy Sheet if only my old Fella had the foresight to patent that idea, I might be rich now lol

Hello mate, where did you get the Barber Turnock pic from? it looks like its from a advert or something, if you get anymore it would be great to see them as I have a lot of great memories from Barbers… Thanks Sepo

It came from a batch of Atkinson factory negatives that I hold. I’ll look out some more for you.
