This was a nice little tractor that I bought secondhand to shunt locally but it was often drafted in to do change overs and the odd job when we were under pressure! It was ex Pickford Tank Haulage and had spent it’s entire life running into Manchester Airport with Av Gas from BP Partington. It was a smooth runner 150 LX/6spd DB/Kirkstall BDR.I re-call one night when it ran down to Tubby’s at Crick on a C/O,20 ton both ways and when I filled it up in the morning it took 39 gallon, unbeatable economy that was at the time!!
Evening all, just back from Cambridge, have our Polish friends really taken over our industry?? Bouncing around on the smooth surface of the A14 behind one of our Belgian friends, (who, judging by his velocity would seem to have had a “non operative” speed limiter), I recalled regularly seeing around Lille, a red Krupp cab Mk1 4x2 tractor, fitted with very large front wheels and tyre equipment. It used to stand out because across the front bumper, in full hight script was boldly written Atkinson. I think the operators name was something like “Vivedesen”? She was very smart, and at that time, 79ish would have been over 10 years old, mind you the Belgians, and French would keep lorries forever, they really did not work them like the British. Chris, how many Krupps did Atkinson build, and do any still exist, any idea?? Cheerio for now.
ERF’s Rule!! well they did in this shot!! must have felt sorry for them (or weakened!!).

I think there’s a few Atki’s behind Dave but if we were attacked the ERF’s got it first!!! Cheers Dennis.

Thanks for the pics John
Not sure what’s meant to be unusual about a Borderer with a 240 Gardner, though!

Was the reference to being 250 BHP out of the ordinary Chris? Had Alf been “tickling” his 240’s up a little bit? Cheers Dennis.

Well, some of the literature quoted them as 246 bhp anyway
Not a very good shot but it clearly shows the Kysor shutter behind the grille of a brand spanking new Borderer in the workshop in Milnthorpe. Our first 3 new Borderers were fitted with Kysors but it was reckoned that some of the radiators were splitting by the sheer pull of the fan when the shutter was closed.I decided that the Dynair thermo fan was a better proposition so all our new ■■■■■■■ were then fitted with them.We had to stand the grille off on spacers when we fitted a Fan to a Seddon 32/4 ■■■■■■■ tractor.I believe the Dynair fan saved about 5 bhp and the ■■■■■■■ motors with the Fans did seem to perform better, especially at night!! Cheers Dennis.
There`s a picture of 3 Atkis in a scrapyard somewhere in ■■■■■■■ in this months Heritage Commercials ,i think 1 is an old Stamper motor

Dennis,We had an Atki where the fan came off and went through the rad. Apparently it was fitted with the wrong water pump, it had a long neck instead of a short one “Cracker” Bates had complained about the noise it was making as it kicked in but until it “broke” no-one guessed at the cause. Great memories. kevmac47

Both Geoff Stamper and his uncle Gordon ( G. A.) were loyal Atki operators over many years. Cheers Dennis.

IIRC Kev the Dynair assembly was longer than the ■■■■■■■ O/E in order to accomodate the “gubbins” but we had trouble free running from memory and we had a good number in operation. Then when the Scandinavians joined the fleet they were already fitted with thermo fans!! IIRC the later Gardners had them on as well, but I maybe getting “carried away” Doh!! Cheers Dennis.
Some of the North East lads, bumper for one, may have backloaded from Hunters of Wishaw? This was Barneys Atki but nothing would convince him to pose in any of the shots
Unless I’m mistaken this looks like a well picked steering wheel. The plastic usually wore thin and you’d end up with bicycle handlebar tape or worse, a big furry glove
had a great drive down to southampton yesterday, seen a couple of e type jags on the a34 on way down, then to top it off coming back up i spot a atki boarderer with a low loader and steam engine load. it wasnt in pristine condition which made it more appealing…

ERF always quoted the output as 244.89 bhp in their literature - at least all the docs I’ve read.
