MK1 & MK11 Atkinsons,a class on their own

thorpes were big atki users --a Peter jarman. Pic

I remember my dad getting a brand new K reg Atki with the 180 Gardner and DB 6 speed box he wasn`t impressed .Thats after driving a 1959 Mammoth Major and drag with a 9.6 engine and 5 speed box top speed 38mph.That was for Henry Longs, but he moved to Harold Woods and eventually got a new ERF with a 220 ■■■■■■■ which he was very impressed with.

OK “ramone” we’er not putting up with any negative remarks about Atki’s on their own thread!!! Just look at those shots John has put on! Should bring a tear to anyone’s eye all those beautiful Borderers. Now come on! we know your a sensible lad and fair enough an Atki with a spec you have described may not have been the sharpest motor on the fleet but it sure as hell would have been one of the most reliable no doubt! and it was “head and shoulders” better than a Seddon,Guy and ERF with the same spec! Well in IMHO anyhow! Now come on “ramone” shape up we do expect better from you eh! Cheers Dennis.

Just a bit of good house keeping,I had to re post this Bewick Atki from letting it languish on the “fast eddie” thread!

Same tractor NEC 260K just a day or two old in early '72 and shot here standing in Castle Street Kendal, after a shower of rain! This is a shot of the first trip which this Atki did IIRC I tipped 20 ton of reels at British Sisal Kraft in Strood and then reloaded out of Robinson Sacks on The Estoplade in Rochester. The motor is shot here pulling out of the loading bay.

Hiya Paul, this 8 wheeler would have been supplied by Scotts of Penrith the Atki dealers that opened up in the old Goods yard at Penrith station. They were a subsiduary of Coalite Products( same firm that owned most of the Falklands Isles at the time!!) Cheers Dennis.

Your just trying to entice “carryfast” onto the thread aren’t you! However he is otherwise engaged in the “smoke” whipping up the “natives” and organising the looting!! Dennis.

I always reckoned that the Atki was the finest British motor but I did buy ERF’s,Seddons and Guys mainly when I couldn’t wait for an Atki! And these other motors did us a good job as well.Cheers Dennis.

I always thought the Atkinson was a fine truck…but I was too young to have any worthwhile experience of them…I thought its cousin, the Seddon Atkinson Strato with the Daf cab,■■■■■■■ 14 litre engine and twin splitter 'box was the finest British truck made,in my humble opinion, comfortable, gutsy and nice to drive…

What exactly endeared you to the Atkinson so much Dennis…From an operator’s point of view,in what way were they ahead of the competion in their day?

They were the most popular wagon of choice by the small to medium size haulage contractor and though I am old enough to have driven them I have only driven the venturer and view line models both 6x4 s but I do agree with you on the "Strato " in the spec, you set out which I have driven and I still think it was the best "British " wagon produced,
cheers Johnnie

Hiya “Riverstick” IMHO and from first hand experience at the time, the Atki was an impressive, well built, easy to work on and drive unit. They also held their price in the secondhand market(if they’d been well looked after) However they really had had their day by the later 70’s and we had to move with the times(as in Scania!) The Sed Atk wasn’t,IMHO,a worthy successor to the great Borderer and we had started to experience failures in Group axles which Seddons had insisted Atki’s used in the Borderer from the time they took over! When we started running Sed Atk 8LXB tractors boy did we hit problems with that Group axle!!The first Borderers I bought had the old Kirkstall BDR axle then I ordered the next ones with the Eaton axle which I always preferred although we did have a few with the, then, new Kirkstall HR axle which was OK but our operation didn’t really need a hub reduction axle thats why I much preferred the Eaton single reduction spec.Hope this spiel is of interest to you, cheers Dennis.

This is a '72 shot of the first two Borderers we got at Bewick Transport MEC 98K and NEC 260K,98K was a super smooth motor in all respects! It had a 205 ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ 610/Kirkstall BDR, and for some unexplainable reason this axle was a ratio higher than the standard spec used,it’s top speed was circa 63/64 mph as opposed to circa 57mph as standard. This higher ratio gave this motor an easier cruising speed on the M/way.This shot was taken in our first little depot we had on the A6 in Milnthorpe.

A true Atkinson .Big ■■■■■■■ This motor had its very own sound from the lovely
straight 8 cylinder Gardner it had in it.
