I wonder what the British built lorries would be like today if we still had a truck industry in this country.Surely we could have built something that could compete with todays trucks Scania/Volvo/DAF/MAN etc, what do you lads think?

The Wynn’s Atki would have been some tool!!! 8LXB magic!! Bewick.

8LXBV8BRIAN:
A true Atkinson .Big ■■■■■■■ This motor had its very own sound from the lovely
straight 8 cylinder Gardner it had in it.

This is a shot of an ex Waugh Atki that I bought when it was about 12 months old.Why it got booted out by Waughs and returned to Atki’s I’ll never understand as it it was a great motor for us during its years on the fleet! Power steering would have helped but never mind it was an “ace” motor nonetheless!!Bewick.

Yes i can remember ONL 482M Stu cartwright had it new , plus i remember
the first time it came back in to the workshop for the famous vibration it had  .
It was the last of two 220 ■■■■■■■ to come into the fleet PTY 334M the other but it had the D/B-6 speed box what a rubbish spec that was plus the rear group axle to make it even worse, the next batch had the 250 ■■■■■■■ in them and power steering.

Old one of Caddies

Stanfield:
One more from yesterdays show. This is a cracker.0

Thank you - and this is what it looked like when we first got it:

Chris Webb:
I think the Lawrence 8-legger SWW 268M is ex Cowgills Skipton. All great photos although I never drove one,all AEC for me in the 60s and 70s.

I’m not sure where the chassis originated Chris, but this is where the cab came from:

and in its original guise:

Most of the original restoration was done by the late Arnold Roe, who lived near Whalley. He’d bought the wagon from somewhere like Somerset, as I recall (this would have been the mid 90s) and rebuilt the chassis and running gear. He bought the cab from John Killingbeck - it was one of the many spare cabs in the yard at that time.

Funny you should mention that…

Hello,
That Peter McCallum & Sons wagon is now owned by Tyson H Burridge (Distington).
Burridges bought the lorry and used it in there fleet after it’s second owner, Haigs of Scotland, was finished with the lorry. Burridges used it for many years until it was laid up in the yard at Distington. They restored it in the McCallum livery about 2 Years ago.
I will try to post a photo of it.

Hi then, heres my three pennath

Cheers Bubbs,

hi Bewick
i never had the good fortune to drive a mk2 Atki on the road only in the yard when we had one in for repair.
the firm i worked for as a mechanic had 4 sed atki 400 in the fleet these had RR265 engines and fuller gearboxes and the hub reduction rear axles. it was these hubs that gave us the only source of bother from these motors. we were forever recovering them because of these failing and eventually kept two overhauled hubs and halfshafts in stock.
how did you find the 240 gardner and fuller box combination as we had an erf tractor unit with this set up and the driver was always complaining it would not pull. we also had four erf eight wheelers with gardner 180 and the DB six speed box they were diabolical
cheers
mick
