(Mis)Managed motorways part n

Think I got it now, not using the new lane 1 is a political protest.

There certainly are some superstars on here

To the ones who refuse to use lane 1 (Running HS) - Do you run in lane 2 of a dual carriageway? On the Smart Motorways where there are NO hard shoulder, do you run in lane 2?

If I am allowed to run in the hard shoulder, I do, its quicker and saves being in lane 3 of 4 overtaking the queues of sheep in lane 2. As for the muppets that deliberately try to run others off the road when being undertook, go for it, you have no idea who has dash cams - I do and was nearly run off the road by some clown on the Toddington stretch of the M1, the police reviewed the evidence and prosecuted the driver for “Driving without due care and attention” which resulted in 3 points and £100 fine after making such a desperate attempt to force me off the road. The police also clarified I was right to be in lane 1 (Hard Shoulder) as the overhead signs stated “Congestion” and undertaking is permitted.

Some may say that it was wrong to report such antics to the police, but at the end of the day, the other muppets actions were deliberate and could have caused a serious accident. People like this do not deserve a driving licence.

Just a quick question - is the group that refuse to move with the times the “Old Hands” generation?

I’m what you might term as an “old hand” Trubster and as a rule I try to adhere to the Highway Code, this publication says that I must drive on the left unless overtaking, therefore if it’s h/s running then that’s where you’ll find me. It’s not a difficult concept tbh and if there’s a stationary vehicle there I’ll treat it the same as I would a stationary vehicle in lane one of a d/c in that I’ll move over.

Edit to add; after reading this thread I feel that certain posters should have “I fear change” tattooed on their foreheads!

It couldn’t be tattooed on the left of their forehead though.

The hard shoulder running is a cheaper way of adding a fourth lane, and all the extra speed camera.on all those gantries are for revenue generaton and not to ease congestion in fact the moment those pantries are illuminated. congestion begins everything comes to a halt due to the Muppets who haven’t clue you know the ones who have tunnel vision who won’t change lane to let you out, etc

Things don’t get congested in my house when the pantry light comes on, well apart from a queue for the caviar and crackers.

In fact I have found smart motorways can cope well with an increased volume of traffic, although I have to admit when even the smart motorway can’t cope with the volume it does appear to be a daunting prospect when faced with 4+ lanes of standing traffic.

Not sure what you mean about muppets who won’t change lane, do you mean the ones who already have priority as your joining the M’way, or do you struggle with your roadcraft. I find they either let me in or I patiently go for the next gap after them- if that vehicle doesn’ want to let me in either when i have reached a similar speed and things are getting silly then i find a little wiggle usually works well on smaller vehicles…not that i condone these shenanigans just that in order to make progress I pick my battles wisely if theres a potential for one. Course I won’t deliberatey crash into another vehicle to force my way in as the paperwork hassle is a nuiscance but they don’t know that.

I drove from Cheshire to ■■■■■■■ and back a few months ago, M60, M61, M56,M6 never passed a single vehicle stopped on the HS in over a 300 mile round trip, seems like a waste of good running lanes to me once they’ve had the appropriate strengthening works done.

Many vehicles stopped on the hard shoulder are drivers checking their post, eating donuts, setting satnavs, out fuel/stupid, warning light so they slam on and stop from experience, cars (although not the drivers) are a lot more reliable than in the old days.

The newer smart motorways are miles safer than any old motorway or dual carriageway at giving warnings.

Don’t hold your breath with hard shoulder running, i think you’ll see in the future permanent ALR on all sections which are presently on off on off

A similar set of arguments could be made regarding “driving in bus lanes out of hours” or “driving in cycle lanes at night”.

Anyone on here been done for driving in a bus lane?

Chances are, you fell foul of missing the sign between the end of one “7-7pm” stretch, and then the next stretch was “at any time” at which point you get photographed driving in the bus lane at night… Ooops! :smiling_imp:

…I could argue that if the bus lanes kept changing as to what time they are valid for - I might keep out of ALL of them at ALL times - except the ones specifically marked up as “heavy goods lanes” of which there are not enough of in my opinion…

Nope

Same thing.

Drive and be alert
Read sign
Act on sign
Drive and be alert

Repeat
