In a very overregulated industry, and with a massive driver shortage, should the government not step in, and pass an act of Parliament to insure there is a minimum pay rate for all classes of drivers, plus days, nights, weekends,
And time and a half after 8 hours.
Double time after 10 hours
Sounds alien to most but yes we used to get paid more after 8 hours.
Simply, no.
Or just bring in more foreigners simple

Once upon a time in a land far far away …
Government can make a minimum wage for drivers but you will land up with the same scenario as the industry had years ago, when the Gaffers always made the excuse I pay RHA rates,to avoid shelling out more. Then it starts all over again with Companies trying to recruit Drivers by offering more.
Many Companies now operate 24/7 shifts of 5/7 where time and half double time etc no longer exist, I used to work for Company before retiring who enhanced the hourly rate but did away with premium payment for w/e and o/t. Many preferred it that way it meant the usual “brown nosers” did not get the extra money and hours, extra money only came with afternoon and nights shift premium.
Might add that was over 10 years ago, sure premium rates are and have been for awhile a thing of the past,
Overtime is often on a weekly basis now, so it doesn’t really protect drivers from getting long shifts alongside shorter ones, which may even out to the contracted hours. 48 hours over 5 days kind of thing and they can send you home early or have you out till whatever time.

In a free market economy, wages are set by the Law of Supply and Demand. There is a minimum pay rate in the sense that if you offer jobs at £9 per hour, no-one will work for you.

Harry nails it yet again. Exactly this ^. No regulation or government interference needed. Don’t we have far too much of that interfering in our lives already?
As I’ve said before, all these tinpot haulage companies who over the past couple of decades have managed to hang on by a thread by using cheap eastern european labour are now having a big wake up call in realising that their business is over - simply because there’s no way they can afford to pay the new market rate and still turn a profit. Survival of the fittest.
For now, the drivers have the upper hand as the demand exceeds the supply.

Here’s a thing, if all the ‘tin pot’ companies do go ■■■■ up. Then only those willing to pay acceptable wages will be delivering. Meaning suppliers having to pay premium prices anyway. That can’t happen soon enough. But then it all starts over again, when driver choice is limited to ‘x’ number of companies, the shoe is again on the other foot. So maybe not so quickly please…

I agree. Also under no illusion that we’ll be paying for own higher rates via more expensive goods and services as they offset their higher transportation costs. Twas ever thus.

“Upper hand”, what a load of tosh. If somebody emptied a suitcase of £20 notes on the street you would probably be one of the ones scrabbling around in the melee trying to get as much as you could.

Well, yes, yes I would!
In what way do you believe that drivers don’t have the upper hand as things stand today with the UK haulage industry?

That’s my point for smaller family run hauliers to compete against the giants like culina, stobart, it should be a level playing field. Stobart started by running loads for a loss, to put competition out off the game, they still do.
It’s warehousing that keeps them going
So if a minimum wage for us unskilled characters, that could shut this country down in under a day, was established across the industry, who knows the job might even attract new blood.
I personally think government intervention is required, set payrates and like, minimum pay it goes up evrey year.
Unlike what we’ve had last 15 years
Looking at how NHS medical staff were stitched up, compared to unionized orderlies - who’ve never had it so good…
This ongoing so-called “shortage” will end up being a nation of under qualified personnel performing double shifts for half the industry average pay - as the new “Norm” unless the public will is there to make a real difference this time around…
One big lie doing the rounds at present - is that “Interest rates are about to take off”…
They can’t. Banks would go under the moment en-masse default happens, which would only take a hike in the base rate to around 2-3% to trigger - nowhere near the 15% rates we saw all the way back in 1992 that lost over 2million people their mortgaged houses for LIFE, as once one has defaulted a mortage - it is well nigh impossible to get another mortgage ever again, excepting those who’ve managed to get a fresh job on at least double the old one’s pay in the meantime, of course… That isn’t “most of us” however.
The government - clearly aims to ■■■■ of a few from the huge Tory majorities among the South of England constituencies, enough to reduce 5 figure majorities to say, 3 or 4 figure ones - whilst pandering to “Red Wall” seats up north, where all the money, investment, praise, and “assistance” gets mopped up by a bunch of people who may or may not be grateful enough in due course to return Tory MPs to Parliament, overturning moderate majorities in doing so.
They just failed in Batley and Spen, so Hartlepool looks like being a one-off flash-in-the-pan…
Don’t pander to the lies then. They are set there to trick the majority of the same public who voted for them.
Boris Johnson - is a canny politician, and nothing that has been done or said by the government over the past two years (or at any other time…) was said, without careful consideration as to the consequences…
■■■■■■■■ and Goings,
Handcock now a ■■■■■■■■ ■■■■ Up.
Now all we need is someone’s foot in someone else’s crutch - to get the full brag hand there…
I strongly suspect that the “Public” will end up being the ‘Crutch’ however, and the coniving Parliamtarians across all parties - the foot being thrust into it at very high velocity indeed…

It just doesn’t work like that. There are about a milliom and one problems with this which would result in unintended consequences downstream. Presumably, in order for this utopia to happen, you’d be happy paying significantly more for your food and general living costs to subsidise it?

OK. I’m listening please tell me the problems,
There’d be a steady stream of recruit to driving,
An therefore not a driver shortage.
This industry needs government handling we are important
Let’s start with the basics :
Who is paying for it ?

It is quite apparent that years of “austerity” has made the wealth gap wider…
So the poor are now proportionately paying more.
Next question?
