Just drove 24 miles, Torquay to Exeter, just pulling into DPD for weeks work when the phone rings. Manpower agency on the other end…“They have cancelled you.” I’m sick of getting messed about. Gimme a job someone. Please.
Surely you’ll still get paid for today though ?
Nope…May get fuel money, but nowt else.
F king hell wouldn’t be happy with that whatsoever, that happened to me about 3 years ago turned up at British Bakeries to be told go straight home but did get 8 hours pay though.
You need to get a job.
A bit of advice for all agency drivers. DON’T answer your phone on the way to work, if it rings when you are in the car park, let it ring. report to the transport office and let them tell you the job has been cancelled. In this case you will have a valid claim for payment, as you reported as requested. also, it’s surprising how many companies will “find” you something because they a) think they will have to pay you anyway, or b) feel guilty about cancelling so late.
another thing to remember is that a lot of agencies have a clause in the contract about minimum time before booking when , if cancelled, the job should still be paid. Of course they won’t tell you that, but if you push it, you should get paid. 3 times since christmas this has happened to me, and all three times i got 8 hours pay for turning up because I have a decent agency who know that if they treat me fairly, i will get them out the muck when needed.
Thank goodness you drove yourself there and hadn’t taken a taxi.
Seriously though that ■■■■■, I hope you at least get your fuel costs back but it should be more.
I just e-mailed them and told 'em pay up, or do one.

You did remember to tell them you had turned down other, better paying, work for today because they had booked you first and you didn’t want to let them down?

■■■■ right, stick to your guns…
Personally, I’d expect full pay for one day and I would refuse to work for them in future. Not sure if you have that option but you must insist on payment for the day you turned up…
I agree with Coffeeholic, tell 'em you turned other work down for the week and that you want paying anyway.
■■■■■■■■ all of 'em, i hate agencies…

Make it clear if you take a shift off that agency again you ain’t traveling to work only to be canceled without 8hrs pay.
You should be paid, but maybe theres too many drivers not enough shifts they think they can take libertys.
Happened to me a couple of weeks back, had just left the house at 10.30 for an 11am start, phone rings, answered and told run had been cancelled.
Got 4 hours pay though, which is better than a kick in the nuts ( unless youre into that kind of thing )

Did you not ask for 8 hours? That’s the minimum shift isn’t it?
They would be paying. 8hrs + fuel.
I work for manpower now and again, been about 5 years now lol. If they cancel when you get on site make sure the pay you for it,
I managed to get banned from a site before xmas, was meant to be a full week and got banned on the monday
Said company threatened to tell the agency i was banned but never did…guess who got a weeks pay to stay at home…
Just had a very interesting phone call. “I’m really stuck, they want you for the rest of the week guaranteed. I’ll give you extra £1per hour if you go in.” So I said, pay me for today and it’s a deal. So I’m in tomorrow.

It’s off!
It happened to me lots of times at Blakes. They would often book 40+ drivers for a day and leave three or four of us sitting in the canteen. Still got the 8 hours though.
On a couple of occasions, with different companies I arrived to find I’d been cancelled. When I phoned the Agency they sent me to another job and paid me for that plus 4 hours for the cancellation. I liked that…
