Merge in turn

As per the title…

Slightly different viewpoint from motorway plod.

I’m not a fan of signs only on the nearside, as the commentator rightly pointed out the car driver would not have seen these signs due to vehicles on his nearside. So if he wasn’t familiar with the area it’s understandable (especially on a left hand bend) why he was late to merge.

Verdict; much ado about nothing. Cop wasted both of their time here.

So, matey with the allround cameras decides to speed past the other traffic, and then, upon seeing the cones up ahead, makes the dicision to continue at speed, right up to the cones, and forces his way in the queue.
Continueing in the emprty lane is fine, but slow down a bit. Once he noticed the cones/lane closure up ahead, he should have reduced his speed to roughly match the other lane, and indicate to merge with the other lane. Doing that at a speed rooughly matched with the other lane, would have seen him join, probably close to the cones anyway, but in a less aggresive manner.

The cop did the right thing, he saw something that he considered to be aggresive driving, so he pulled the driver, and gave him “words of advice”, to hopefully avoid him doing it again. He even approached on the passenger side.

Honourary mention for the blue car blocking the unmarked police car from joining the queue at the last minute though… :smiling_imp:

In my experience…

It’s not using the empty lane right up to the cones, it’s the speed you do it at. Going roaring through, giving it large and people get angry. Bimble down nice and steady and it’s like no one even knows you’re doing it.

wow…

somebody agrees with me. Thats worrying…

Nonsense.

Lanes open till you get to the cones.

Negan:
Lanes open till you get to the cones.

Yep then you expect others to make room and let you in?

Are you not supposed to read the road ahead?

Macski:
Yep then you expect others to make room and let you in?

Yes I do…

Expect others to let me in. The clue is on the great big yellow sign posts saying ‘Merge in turn’ near the cones. It’s an instruction to let others in.

He is right it is open.
As for expecting others to let you in?
Maybe so,.but it’s like smart motorways, others should be expected to know how to use them, or in this case be expected to know how to merge in turn, or zip merge.
It ain’t mine or anybody else’s fault if they can not (or will not) use the road properly.

As for vid.,.way I see it he didn’t do much wrong, maybe apart from going at it too fast which gave the impression rightly or wrongly of aggressive driving, which is why he was pulled.
If he was doing something wrong, make no mistake he’d have been nicked…end of.

robroy:
[, maybe apart from going at it too fast .

It looks to me that he never exceeded 10 mph. What speed do others think he is doing?

Im reading the road ahead by using the empty lane. If everyone else wants to sit and queue like sheep thats up to them.

TBH, if everyone used both lanes till it became 1 then adopted zip merging instead of sitting a coat of paint off the car in front so no one else got in the queue probably wouldn’t be as bad

You can’t get two into one, if 2000 vehicles for example need to get into one lane it is 2000 vehicles.

Zip merge is just bulling your way in expecting people to let you in because your a self centred ■■■■ who jumped the queue

No its not. Its called using the available road
Sit down

How is it available iof it is closed off?

Agreed.

Highway Code Rule 134
“You should follow the signs and road markings and get into the lane as directed. In congested road conditions do not change lanes unnecessarily. Merging in turn is recommended but only if safe and appropriate when vehicles are travelling at a very low speed, e.g. when approaching road works or a road traffic incident. It is not recommended at high speed.”

Use the road until you are near the signs that tell you to change lanes.
Don`t change lanes just because the vehicle in front has changed lanes. That way the queue will be two lanes wide, not one lane wide.
There will be the same number of vehicles in the queue, but it will affect half the lengthy of road.

(But don`t flash down the outside lane at warp speed and force a way in at the last instant)

But then you expect someone to make room for you so you can push in?

How does it half the length of the road?

Macski:

Its not pushing in. Get a grip of yourself

Macski:
How does it half the length of the road?

If there are a number of vehicles in a queue, then having them queue two abreast, rather than single file, will halve the length of road affected by the queue.
Hence, fewer traffic lights, junctions etc possibly jammed by the queue.
