Mercedes-benz NG and SK's Trucks

SAY No More!

I SAY!

I have asked before, yet no-one seems to remember Graham Gardner who pulled the lift tanks for Wim Vos. An all Mercedes fleet with large 3 figure numbers on the doors. Either in Gardners colours of Orange or occasionally in VOS gree.

Come on Trucknetties, don’t let me down.

I remember Graham Gardner running through Hull late 70s early 80s ?

I worked with many of the lads, but can I find any pictures? No. They certainly knew the meaning of flying

You got to a love an 80’s Benz.
Fingers crossed we will have our mint ex MB museum 1628S out and about soon, this is her in the yard waiting for a final clean and some proper pictures to be taken.

Here is the original.

How interesting to see the 1625 demonstrator. At first i thought it was our old motor, but after i’d looked through the archive of old lorry photos i found ours was BKR 740Y ( which was kept in demo livery ). Back in the 70s & 80s Sparshatts of Sittingbourne supplied most of the local hauliers with Mercedes trucks, almost everyone round here had at least one.
Luckily ive been able to aquire many of the original photos of most of the local fleets from that time going back to the days of the 1418s & 1924 models. Ive now got 3 or 4 albums full!!. I also have the A & RJ Wood company album which goes right back to the 50s long before the first Mercs arrived in 76. I really look foward to seeing the restored 1628 in the metal.

Hi Mark good pictures keep them coming in . Tony

Hi just a few pictures of the merc truck i drove at Joints.

Tony

I’ve posted this before, but heres one of my old motors. Sounded like a sack of spanners, but pulled well, very reliable engine (not that gearshift crap though) and just something about the sound of the growling V8 I liked.

The one in the middle - D985 CVN, is my old truck (back in the days when I had a real job  )
One of the first 1635’s and this photo I think is from a Merc press release

A huge step up from the Sudden Accident 411 I had before… I have a photo somewhere after it had a respray into FVS new livery.

By todays standards a cramped, underpowered unsosphisticated truck, but at the time was easily one of the best.

Having a 350 (with a night heater) when most of the fleet was still in 240 or 290 ■■■■■■■ powered ERFs or 320 Seddon Atkinsons meant I was probably a blue eyed boy

I dont know why we didnt get more ( I can only remember one 1633 and two 1635 being on the fleet) as they were good on fuel and pretty reliable (apart from the EPS) but the company went onto ■■■■■■■ powered Strato;s rather than Mercs. I also dont remember the parent company running Mercs at all (Prestons of Potto) as the few next generation Mercs (2036?) that arrived FVS ran in Prestons colours. I dont remember Potto running Mercs at all until the Actros came on the scene.

FVS are still running a few 1st generation Actros on local work (on “Y” reg plates ) in Prestons colours

Edit: … found the photo of the it, taken a good few years later when it was my workhorse, and still looking good.

The photo doesnt do it justice as you cant see the pinstriping and detail on the livery, done the old fashioned way with a paint brush and artists eye rather than computer wrap

An operator near me had nothing but Mercedes for many years, never less than a 1632 and eventually got the 48’s, anyone running to Felixstowe will have seen them in the 70’s 80’s with a metallic purple and silver livery.
