Mercedes axor,back pain,leg pain...its a pain in the arse!

i have the unpleasant task of driving a fleet spec merc axor unit,at 6-2" im not the shortest, but have driven fl volvo n pcab scannies, but never with the pain that this wagon causes!left leg is pushed towards steering column, due to engine hump curving in,right foot is wedged under pedal(if cruise on)due to wheel arch curve, and it feel like yr pressed against steering wheel,as the"uprated" seat, which is standard quality on every other current wagon, sits so far forward on its runners,it wont go back nearly enough :imp:
ive had back trouble, and the symtoms can only be described as sciatica in my legs/arse! anyone else had these issues, all the drivers at my firm hate the things…but as usual, cheap is cheerful, tho not for the driver!
if yr gaffer mentions em,put him/her off!

i don’t like them either, like you said you can’t put your foot under the clutch pedal, and if you are a bit on the larger side the engine hump is in the way of your leg.
the actros is a lot better.

Driven one for the first time today, and have found exactly the same problems that you have described.

Think it’ll be the new P cab scania. :imp:

You readin this Gaz

I still reckon we should get onto Hibbo at Hill Hire and get him to send us an MAN instead

yes graham i will get on to hill hire first thing monday and get a few man’s to replace you moaning girls

just wait untill you are on the hardshoulder with the hazards on, reading the handbook trying to work out what the latest warning light on the dash is for.  .we had dafs for years ,but mercs were a lot cheaper so we ended up with them.

Bet you can`t even remember the last time you drove one, can you SICK NOTE

And if you remember the FL did give you a bit of pain  when you hit the car park
myself i usually get out of my sleeping bag before trying to leave the cab

Couldn’t agree more, i hate merc trucks, the pedals always seem to be in the wrong place compared to the steering wheel and seat, and the seats are always to hard, Tesco’s Milton Keynes use to run MAN’s, went back there a couple of moths ago only to see that they’ve chained to mercs, haven’t and won’t go back again :exclamation:

EU Directive 6969 sub section 01/04 states; Maximum driver height not to exceed 1.850 metres except in special circumstances where length of 3rd leg may be added to maximum height of driver. Sub section 01/04 part 3 states 3rd leg must be deducted where said 3rd leg exceeds 350mm. Additionaly an exemption is made for midgets of less than 0.925 metres where two midgets may be sellotaped together to provide the regulation maximum height of 1. 850 metres. Where aforementioned definitions fail to relieve pain in arse, said driver will be required to attend the Fred Flintstone school of driving for alternative driving techniques.

Tiger.

PS I really need to get a job, just too much time on my hands

pmsl

I remember driving those things… eewwwwww horrid!

No room for your left foot, badly laid out cab, huge engine hump… just plain nasty.

That’s why I call them Kaxors, absolute rubbish.

What is this new stabbing pain in the middle upper left side of my back? I have suffered from chronic back pain for three years now. I am 31, not overweight, and did not have an injury! I had disc replacement surgury on L4-5 about a year and a half ago with no success. Discography shows that the L5-S1 is not healthy and may be the cause of continued pain. In the past few months I have developed left leg pain and numbness with very bad hip pain as well. This stabbing in my left side (on the back) has just happened and is just aweful when I wake up in the morning. No position helps! Is this a muscle? I can locate it straight away with my left hand reaching back and it hurts to the touch. Any ideas?

Holy thread revival batman

Everything we drive is a compromise, all designed for left hand drive, the engine hump doesn’t get in the way on a left ■■■■■■, the gearbox linkage works better and the pedals are in the correct position.

It is a pain in the arse :stuck_out_tongue:

The auto axors ain’t too bad. I just used to hit my leg getting in and out the cab on the top of the wheel arch plastic thing.

The bloke who designed the Axor obviously never drove one!

I detest the things which is a shame because the few I’ve driven actually pulled quite well. If Mercedes want to know how to build a truck, they should take a good look at the Volvo FH. Good all round reliable, comfortable and well built truck.

Yes its highly likely that its the muscle going into spasm in an attempt to protect your damaged spine & will indeed hurt to the touch should it be that bad.
You need (if what you say is accurate) to seriously think about giving up driving, or at the very least not drive another Merc, yes they can make a tidy car but by Christ they have made some truly awful attempts over the years in the HGV market. (IMO)
I assume that you had partial removal of L4/5 as the next step (and last) is fusion and that will put you out for a long time, so that being the case act now.

Ive been driving one for a couple of weeks, and my back and knees are killing me! It’s easy to see why, if you look at the passenger footwell, there is much more room than on the drivers side. i believe they have done the same as scania and a few others, and just swapped the controls over from a left hand drive cab, and left the centre engine mount exactly the same. look at the shape of it from the bunk and you can see that it bends to the right from the gear stick forward, making the footwell narrower on the right side.
Anyone who has a back problem after driving one of these would have a good case for compensation against Merc i would think.
