Hi we are looking at possibly purchasing an Merc Actros 2544 or 2546 LS MP2, what are the pros & cons of these trucks?
We would be running at max of 36 tons gross & only doing day work, also what fuel consumption could we expect?
Thanks

Firstly they are good, very good infact. But remember an Actros isnt for everyone. merc design them to be treated with care eg. no gear grinding or idle reving.
If your running at 36 tonnes why dont you get an 1844/46. You can get around 8-8.5mpg on light work(36 tonne) Mine does 7.5mpg and i run at 42 ton both ways while loading and unloading with a crane.I dont have one bad thing to say about the Actros.
Ellis is right re the 1844/6. If you’re running at only 36 tonne then you’ve no need for a 6 legger (the 25… prefix models and above). A 4 legger (18…'s) will suffice and are probably a bit cheaper than the 6 leggers, although I’m only guessing at that bit.
40k will buy a very low mileage o6 1844ls

I see what you mean about a mile long shortened now …Denis F
That looks like one of Sovereign’s old ones judging by the colour.

This should answer your question,ish
forget the 440,the difference between them and the 460 is like night and day and they sell for about the same price
did swear by volvo fh’s,boss has hired a actros 1846 for the time being and have been ropping hints to him that if he boughtoe of these babies put my name on it loads more space and even though its got a clutch i would drive one daily.
Thanks for all the replies, the reason we tend to run 6x2 is we ooperate a low loader trailer & run heavy forklifts right up onto the swaneck hece the drive axle is very close to the limit with a 4x2, also the tax is a lot cheaper too at 36 tons, we currntly run a 420 fh12 but are quite dissapointed with it to be honest, it is poor on fuel & doesnt seem to pull particurly well either even at 36 tons.
I have always thought Mercedes were solid reliable lorries but have had no experience of the Actros models so any info is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

If it’s power youre after then the 46 is your man. The torque from a 410 hp actros is the same as a 420 fh- so a 460 can hump weight. I came from a 420 fm to my 1846 and there is huge difference at full weight.
i had one on demo truck said return to garage before put under first trailer not the way to sell me 8 tractors.
we have a 2546 msc 6x2 best truck on the road
there ok but dont get carried away jamie
We have a 1846 that the driver seems to really like. He does keep it very clean and tidy but we have never had a mechanical problem with it. I have had a go in it (not on the public road!) and it was easy to drive , well going fowards was!
you dont drive a merc chav then
Just an Update we have been running our 2546 Megaspace for around 4 months now, so far all seems good fuel consumption is better than our 420 FH & it Certainly puls a lot better too.
We have the two pedal gearbox which is ok but best to use manually when there is hilly terrain around as it cannot make it’s mind up which gear it wants quickly enough.
But overall we are pleased with it.
i did’nt realise that they had made a good merc truck yet,i used to drive a 430 daf & running at 44 ton i used to fly past them 460 recycled u-boats,they could’nt pull me outa bed.
