best to use manually when there is hilly terrain around as it cannot make it’s mind up which gear it wants quickly enough.
Sure its just on hilly stuff ?

i did’nt realise that they had made a good merc truck yet,i used to drive a 430 daf & running at 44 ton i used to fly past them 460 recycled u-boats,they could’nt pull me outa bed.
I smell bs and i’ll tell you why @ the min me and

are emptying two boats from a port in the southeast of Ireland. Each load is the same. So we all run the 2 1/2 hour journey home usually in twos or threes. The daf is the first to drop on the hills and the 380 scania is next. The two 420 scanias can be passed but not easily enough to bother. the r500 i can run with and in the same way i dont bother passing the 420 scanias the 500 doesnt pass me.
I drive an Actros -1846,the heavier i load it the better it pulls.
the problem with the internet is you get guys answering posts who either are to young to drive -have no relavent experience-think scania are great-think daf are great -or dont even drive a truck.
The 46 Actros is a very good lorry, about as much as you need in the UK (or Eire for Ellies Dad) IMO the cab on the MP2 is a nice place to sit all day, the MegaSpace is probably the best cab on the market & PowerShift is as good as I-shift, I wouldn’t pay 40k for one, there’s a recession & people ain’t buying lorries so you should be able to get one a bit cheaper than that.
Ellies Dad, I don’t get how it can pull better when it’s heavier though, the ONLY way that would happen is if you were going downhill, seems you slept in the Physics class too

Well my point is that more weight doesnt mean less speed,it just seems the truck puts up a better fight. The mark of a good puller i reckon. As for sleepin in physics im surprised you could even spell “it”.
we had a fleet of 6x2’s (2546’s) if you are doing light work i’d defo go for the 4x2 as the 6x2 seems to wonder due to the midlift being fixed and not a steer!!! other than that i found they were a much better designed vehicle than the R420 mid cabbed things weve got now!!! i am just a mere driver but if i was in the market id defo be looking ata the actros!!!
Drove an 06 plate Actros Megaspace 1846 460 for half of 2008…it was a 4x2, a very nice unit. The EPS gearbox was annoying at first but you get used to it’s slowness at changing and work with it and I eventually liked it. I found it pretty good on fuel averaging at 8-8.5 laden at 38 tonne on long distance motorway one-drop work…it never came close to letting me down. Big cab also with flat floor and no storage problems, easy to live in all week no problem.
Don’t know why the newer Actroses are so under-rated by a lot of drivers…probably only because they don’t have Scanny or Volvo badges on the grill! I’ve also driven a fair bit on Volvo FH12 420/460 and although very good trucks the Merc would easily equal and often beat for performance, especially on hills as long as you revved it.

Of course it is all personal choice. I wouldnt thank you for a Scania of any description.
A mate of mine ran Mercs hard for all his life from 1418 through to 1850 and now runs a new Actros 480. He swears by them and he said as long as you put water and oil in them, they will never let you down.
I haven’t been in an Actros for 5 years but even though Carlsberg might be the best lager in the world. I dont drink lager
