Menial xmas

Any other drivers experienced menial tasks?
We are quiet over xmas, so MD has brought us in to “tidy up”, and to try and find menial tasks because he cannot bear us being paid and doing nothing!
Fair enough, he has to pay us, i have no problem with the fact that he wants us to use this time to tidy and clean, I like to clean my truck.
wash trucks, done
clean cabs, done
Polish cabs, done
clear trailers, done
sweep warehouse and yard, done
clean toilets, done.
Tidy transport office, done.
Burn crap pallets and all rubbish, done.

All the above took 6 hours.

We have to work 27/28/31 on 8 hour days, yet we sit around for nothing left to do.

would it not be best, for moral, to give a bit of time off for xmas ?

If i was busy making the co money as normal, great. But this menial bs, seems childish

Yes. I done alot of menial RDC deliveries.:imp:

de-hiring the rental trucks & trailers
yup … the bleak season may be about to start

… Ah yes the old justifying your wage routine.

If i have no deliveries or collections, then i am sent to the yard compound to repair metal road signs, re- stack barriers and generally tidy up , my secret weapon is this pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/9845181 … tAodRE8AHQ switch on to radio station of choice , crack-on nice and steady .

Not as comfortable as the cab radio, but the next best thing.

But your not making money for the company so at least your getting paid.
What if he offered you the time off unpaid?
I assume you’ve not used any holidays?

Currently there are probably a five-figure number of HGV drivers who’d swap their Jobseeker’s Allowance for what you’re doing.

It’s work. Deal with it.

Try being at home without pay since 14th December, because there’s no work. I still don’t know when I’m back in, hence I’ve applied for another job. Problem is, they’re shut down until January 2nd. I’d love to’ve been paid an extra day to clean the lorry.

I had to drive a rigid for 2 days this week

A woman I know who worked in an office was told to count all the 3-pin powerpoints in the building on the afternoon of Xmas Eve.

Me too. I should have said on my earlier post, that as well as doing RDC deliveries for 2 days, I had the pleasure of driving a 26t with a manual gearbox. How I lowered myself to that ill never know.:frowning::grin::grin:

I haven’t this year, although I have in previous years. This time were busy busy with deliveries right up until late xmas eve.
Other times I’d done stuff like dehire pallets, dehire rental trailers, carrying boxes of paperwork through the warehouse etc etc. i don’t mind it at all, its a change.

Lets face it driving a truck is not really rocket science is it?

And as your man would no doubt say you dont want to do it there is plenty more unskilled labour just waiting over the North Sea.

And no Im not takin the P this is reality and we allow this to happen.

Back in the uk I always worked for firms involved in construction and used to always save holiday to cover the Xmas early January period as it would be in the yard cleaning up or helping fitters etc.

Must admit I was pretty shocked you jacked the smiths gig in at this time of year knowing the way construction work goes this time of year.
Any chance getting back on there?

HUGE bust up mate, glad to be out of there. In a strange way I’m much happier despite the uncertainty. People say I should see CAB and get advice but I just want to say (zb) 'em and move on and upwards.I think my posts, post Smiffs reflect this. The gig I moved to is a brilliant little job, just a shame the work’s not there.

So?
I had to work them days too!!!
In fact tomorrow im starting at 0615 and finishing at 1930…

I remember what this was like, a couple of days before christmas eve, the foreman and the boss would give us a list of things to do and go to town, when they came back they were ■■■■■■ and the list of things to do was still to be done :stuck_out_tongue:

Christmas eve came and we had a pallet full of broken equipment, drills, welders, brooms, things got sharpened, repaired replaced or reshafted, or would have done if we had not gone to the pub on the afternoon and got ■■■■■■■

My first job at a proper company saw me being sent out on a special delivery, 2 pallets to Epworth, don’t rush back we are going to get ■■■■■■ at 2pm.

So merry christmas in my case

Used to work as normal on Christmas Eve.We just had the two days off, then back to work until the next bank holiday Good Friday. No New Year bank holidays until later years. If your getting paid to work why worry. Christmas Eve is my birthday, but I preferred to work.
