Proposals to improve skills and safety drivers of lorries and buses and new drivers have been published by the Department for Transport (DfT) in conjunction with the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) and Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA).
The measures are contained in a consultation on the implementation of new European requirements on driver testing, training, examination and licensing which come into force in 2013. Other motorists will not be affected.
At present, drivers of medium-sized and large buses and lorries need to renew their licences every five years once they reach the age of 45. Over-45s also need to demonstrate their fitness to drive through a full medical report.
From 2013, under-45s who drive these vehicles will also need to confirm medical fitness and renew their licence every five years. However, under-45s will not require a full medical report and will still only need to renew their photograph every 10 years. All other drivers and riders will continue to renew their driving licences every 10 years as is currently the case.
another money making sceme, so not only are we gonna have to fork out for the driver cpc but medicals every five years aswell. think it time to find another occoupation after 2013
I dont wish to blow my own trumpet but to be honest I am fitter at 67 than a lot of people I know under 40, I dont smoke ,drink only occasionally, and swim and work out regularly, yet I have to have a medical every year. I regularlly see Fat, out of condition drivers under the age of medical requirement, who must be a bigger risk than me, but are not reqired to have a medical until they are 45.
I also think that after your first medical you should not be required to pay for any further meds.
I will be to old to care for myself but when the CPC is due ALL drivers should not have to pay for it,Unless they intend to become owner drivers.

I read about it the other day, it’s on the DSA and DVLA websites. It was in a press release on the 11th.

Not going to require a medical every 5 years until 45. This new thing is just confirming medical fitness every 5 years up to the age of 45 which sounds like a self certification type of thing.

I don’t see any additional costs, other than a stamp, as renewals are free, except when it is for updating your photograph every 10 years which applies whether you drive trucks or not.

would still mean a trip to docs tho even for fittness report and they prob charge for it
You don’t know that, it could well just be a self confirmation thing. No point getting wound up and jumping to conclusions before all the details are known.
I renew mine yearly because of a medical condition, but as yet it’s just been a form to fill in with my quack’s/specialists details and medication. They then write to who they ned to and make a decision from there. Cost’s nothing but a small amount of time, and keeps me driving. I’m 33.
DRIVER TESTING, TRAINING, EXAMINING AND
LICENSING
IMPLEMENTING NEW EUROPEAN UNION REQUIREMENTS
(Directive 2006/126/EC — the third Directive on driving licences)
6.4.9. We propose that the general procedure in Great Britain for Group 2 drivers under the age of 45 should be that they self-declare their compliance with the medical standards on the five-year renewal application. Making a false declaration and failing to notify a relevant medical condition would continue to be offences liable for prosecution. Existing rules for providing medical reports to renew driving entitlement after age 45 would continue as now.
so it looks like a self declaration is on the cards unless they change their minds.
I was correct in my assumption it will be a self certification thing so no trip to the Doctors required and no medical cost until 45. Page 30 of the PDF in the link Del gave.

Its a good thing, non smokers, light drinkers and keep fit enthusiasists are the first to pop their clogs.
If you wish to live to 90 smoke forty a day and drink like there’s no tomorrow
Seriously this industry is on the road out due to costs. Im a member of the Institute of road transport engineers (IRTE ) and this will be my last year as a member. Its organisations like this who lead these campaigns and at £90 a year subscription for basically nothing more than a magazine its time to call it a day.
