A few years ago I was taking a ship to Deliskilesi in Turkey and when passing to the south of Sicily a message was broadcast that a refugee boat with approx 350 people on board had been wrecked under the cliffs and that people were in the water, ‘all ships in the area please respond’ very strange that most shipborne radios went very quiet … including mine I must add !

best way to sort calais out is make the uk like australia and have a points system based on what you can vring to the country , people cant be eligible for housing, benefits and free nhs until they have worked here full time for at least 5 years, and abolish the court of human of rights and find a better replacement that doesnt allow you to stay here because your pet moggy cant have a good life without you

I came through the tunnel last week, saw a few wandering down the road and more camped in the undergrowth as you came off the motorway to the tunnel.
I think those that are talking of genocide, need to look at a few history books about the concentration camps and also accounts of the soldiers, men hardened to seeing death and destruction, who discovered them. And also accounts of soldiers who saw the the after effects of genocide in places like the Balkans.
However these attitudes are what happens when politicians don’t listen to the people they’re supposed to represent, and they are easy pickings for the extremist groups.

We already have an official immigration system where you have to qualify, but these people are trying to get here illegally a points system wouldn’t make any difference.
Most of them will never claim anything as they or those who benefit from their illegal working don’t want them to be recorded as being here.
As for the story of the cat, it’s not really the truth, it was an over exaggeration from one our lovely tabloid newspapers, regurgitated by a Tory politician at the party conference. Complaints about the story were held up by the press complaints commission.
I’m sure you’ll find most of these stories are total over exaggeration by the media, the outrage the headline causes helps sell newspapers and their owners political agenda.

I don’t think so. Officially, the population of the UK is 62.7 million. Tesco estimate the population as being nearer to 80 million.

yes france does ,but they are only using it as a temporary stop gap before they attempt to get in the trailers of british artic hgvs to take them to the country of thier dreams ,England , there is no incentive for them to remain in france

It’s the exaggerated headlines from our tabloid media, when you dig deeper the story has nothing to do with their headline, but it’s caused outrage and despite being false is used as evidence by others including MPs.
If the unofficial population figure is far higher than the official figure, it must mean many people are here and not on any Government system, I think so many try and come here because they have been promised work and can disappear and work illegally. But if they’re here and not on any Government database how can they claim benefits?

Yeah of,course, every illegal immigrant wants to come here. All of them, probably most of the world wants to come here…
There’s 1,600 immigrants in Calais. That’s a drop in the ocean. Yes its a problem that needs sorting, but this whole ‘poor us we’ve got it so bad’ British attitude is hilarious when you look at the actual figures and where the illegal immigrants are throughout Europe. If you think none stay in France I can only assume you’ve never spent any length of time in France

I’ve read through this thread with interest.
Lots of valid points and lots of non valid ones.
Whoever they are and wherever they come from, to climb into or under or on top of a truck to get to a new country they must be fairly bloody desperate to escape something. But being desperate doesn’t give them the right to go somewhere illegally.
Seeing as this is a truck drivers forum, i will look at it only from the problem it causes drivers.
They are being used against there will, and sometimes hurt while trying to prevent it happening, for illegals to gain unauthorised entry to the uk. If they are caught with illegals on board they are subject to huge fines that they should not be responsible for. It is unfair to punish the drivers in this situation, British drivers as well as every other nationality.
So to that end the British government need to step up and protect there own workers, and there borders from what’s happening. They need to work with and provide any assistance needed to the French to try and stop this happening. Calais is in French soil but it is also a huge trade link for Britain and it needs better policing. I can’t see how Britain can’t help, to me it should be there duty.
I have a lot of sympathy for the immigrants but the laws need to be enforced.
Wow, after reading this forum I am surprised that it hasn’t been suggested that a good solution to end this problem would be to get a few of these people, make them kneel down in front of you in an orange jump suit and before you cut their heads off with a blunt knife, make a speech into the camera warning other people who might be thinking of heading off to Calais to try and gain entry into Britain not to even think about it or they will meet the same faith. Then just post the video on the internet in the hope that it might act as a deterrent and hence solve the problem once and for all.
Apparently if you do this to 30 people you could save yourself around £60,000 in fines, so everyone’s a winner! Happy days.
