Mayor of London wants a truck ban

Saaamon:
What i dont get is why people dislike driving in london, you never seem to get a good reason as to why drivers wont or dont want to go there.

I was the same once ‘hate London, hate doing London, don’t wanna go there’. And then I opened my eyes and realised we have one of (in my opinion the) worlds greatest cities on our doorstep and now I spend as much time as I can there. I understand people not liking cities but if you say you hate London then go on holiday to New York then you’re being silly!

It wont happen but just supposing it did i’d be gutted, love driving in london its such an amazing city and always get excited if im given a few drops in or near the centre.

Think you and I might be in a minority of 2 with views like that

I derive a strange satisfaction from driving in London. It actually feels like you’ve been somewhere…

W

I enjoy doing multi-drop into London and get the pleasure of taking an 18 tonner into 7.5t or god forbid 5t limits. Love getting into and out of tight squeezes to get the job done, especailly doing 8 point turns in tight turning circles and not damaging anything. That’s not sarcasm by the way!

Feel more aware of my capabilities and concentrate more on what I am trying to achieve there than I do out here in the sticks, where I was brought up, the irony :unamused:

Exactly the same here. I love the multidrop work we do round London in an artic.

Yeah, all HGV’s should do a protest through the place and bring it to a crawl

Santa:
I have been saying that for years. A few strategically placed warehouses and a fleet of electric trucks would do it. Most goods are on pallets or in cages these days so handling wouldn’t be a problem. The warehouses would work the same way that the Pallet system hubs work already because there would be two way traffic anyway.

Of course there would have to be some trucks allowed - tippers for one, and construction loads in general. They would have a pre-determined route and a time slot.

Of course it would need legislation but I suspect it would be popular - so what’s the problem?

No thanks.Because just like the M25 all it effectively means is that because some of the cycle riding commie NIMBY’s in London want the place to be a traffic free zone then the countryside of the neighbouring counties gets lumbered with loads of warehousing and transhipment yard development etc etc instead. In addition to all the housing they want built in those counties because most of the hypocrites who shout loudest about what an ‘amazing’ ‘wonderful’ city blah blah it is they don’t actually want to live in the overpopulated urban zb hole that they’ve made for themselves. :bulb: :imp:

Actually New York state as opposed to NYC is one of the nicest places in the world and it’s no surprise that just like London’s surrounding counties that’s where most of the so called ‘New Yorkers’ prefer to live than in or near the zb hole City itself.

That’s as well as maybe but I clearly wasn’t talking about New York state now was I. While we’re at it why not compare rural Oxfordshire to downtown Tokyo

It all depends on if a driver prefers running around in traffic in town or out on the open road without much traffic amongst decent scenery. :bulb: The figures concerning the amount of opportunities and demand for the former type of work v the latter answers your question.Just like demand for the better quality of life, offered by living in London’s surrounding counties,by most ‘Londoners’ at the expense of the locals in those counties for housing and the resulting pressures on that quality of life because of the continuing demands for development in those counties caused by that situation.

Be fair Luke, that’s a hell of a commute! :stuck_out_tongue:

Hate London. It’s full of politicians, bankers, immigrant benefit leechers, media tossers and assorted other spivs. :imp:

I think it ■■■■■ in wealth from ghe rest of the country rather than the claimed radiates it out.

I would favour building a massive fence around the inner circumference of the M25 to trap them all in so the rest of us can get on with our lives.

Thats fair enough but what do you actually dislike about driving in london? Do you go there much?

Haven’t since my euro 3 trucks were made no longer welcome, probably went once or twice a month before that. I suppose there does seem to be a buzz there you don’t get in other major cities and the driving is unique. The only bit of actual driving I’d complain about, over anywhere else, is constantly having to keep an eye on cycles and motorbikes swarming around you like flies.

For the umpteenth time on here the circumference of the M25 doesn’t form the borders of London while even it’s ‘actual’ existing borders were nothing more than a smash and grab raid on the surrounding counties and many of those of us who’ve grown up and lived all our lives in the surrounding counties have good reason to hate the place more than anyone else.Ironically development for London like the M25 being built in the countryside of those counties being one of the reasons for that. :imp:

Yeah your spot on about the “buzz” that other cities dont seem to have.

Yes we all know Carryfast that you don’t like anything beyond the end of your street.

As far as I know I said it’s London ( just like plenty of other cities in Britain and around the world ) that is an overdeveloped zb hole. The end of my street is still surrounded by Surrey’s countryside in all directions, even though it’s well within the ‘circumference of the M25’,not the urban jungle of London,so far.

I wouldn’t care if London banned lorries. I don’t hate going there, I just prefer our other runs. I’d take a night out up North rather than a day in London. Where I used to work, I turned down newer/new lorries because my old one was Euro3. I’d enjoy London if there wasn’t the threat of fines for stupid things. A colleague got a ticket in Stoke Newington for being in a loading bay for 6 minutes too long. How the hell could he handball 2t of flour in 20minutes?

Boris didn’t seem to mind about a big fleet of MAN TGX artics crawling through London last summer, bringing everything to a standstill…but then again, they were full of Team GB Olympic Medalist’s.
He’s only interested in trucks if it suits him e.g needing them for building the Olympic Village etc
If trucks aren’t involved in a Publicity Stunt or PR Exercise are he’s not bothered !!
