Mainland Jobs

Im currently living in belfast doing day work. Does anyone know of english companies flying people over from ireland to drive for them as i believe there is a shortage of drivers. Paying a decent wage of course. Or of any firms in belfast area paying a decent wages.

much thanks

You won’t find anyone flying you over, but just google any transport companies in the south east and I bet you’d line up a dozen interviews by the end of the day

Flights to Belfast are about 30 quid each way.

What s the wage like in Belfast?

There are no jobs in Belfast/N.Ireland. What there is pays minimum wage, eg, Woodside, Montgormery doing local work pay £385 before tax for a contracted 60 hour week…or drag the job out and work abit less. The best money will be found working for the agencies where you’ll get £8.50 to £9.00 p/h.

Manfreight and the other DFDS subbies plus the other fridge firms all pay around £80net PAYE for dayshift.
Sometimes it’s a 12hr shift or sometimes 8hr.
Not great wage but at least it’s £400home for 5shifts and no night’s out.[emoji52]

Nearly sure Montgomery day men are on about £425 for 55hrs contracted and Woodside but more.
Mate does nightshift locals for Woodsides Mon/Fri rarely over 45hrs and reg takes home £420+.

Did 3 weeks for Woodside in Feb 2015. Pay was £385 before tax…day shift. Said they where getting pay rise, think that was going to bring topline to around £410. The £425 is probably before tax.

Belfast rates are not very good at all. Sawers sounds interesting sat to mon. thanks for the reply. I was chatting to a Montgomerys driver does 5.5 days, 12-15 hours. says hes lucky to take home 330. why do people do this. its terrible wages…

Dayshift for the “big” boys is generally crap!!!
You need to do the night’s away on mainland for decent take home.
You will see a small local firm pulling bitumen tankers for Northstone (Red/white DAF)
Those LOCAL drivers are willing to do that ADR work for £8hr then £12hr after 40hrs.
No helping them!!![emoji52]

MPs demand action to tackle driver shortage

Existing measures are not enough to tackle the shortfall in skilled drivers, a new report by the House of Commons Transport Committee has found.

Louise_Ellman
Committee chair Louise Ellman MP

It said that co-operation the transport industry and the government is necessary to beat the deficit in drivers for the haulage industry.

The committee argued that the driver shortage is linked to a shortage of people willing to work in the industry, rather than a shortage of qualified people. It also said that there is no single reason behind the lack of drivers – but that there is a combination of factors that make the job ‘less attractive than it was’.

Not only that, it said the driver shortage has resulted in ‘a dependence on agency and particularly foreign drivers that goes beyond what is needed to cope with seasonal variations and is now necessary to sustain normal operation’. It said that the dependence on agency staff means that operators are ‘probably not investing enough in their staff’.

This results in several risks. If the UK becomes relatively less attractive as a place for foreign drivers to work, the shortage could become more intense quickly, and the ‘longer-term sustainability of the UK’s haulage sector could be undermined if there is not a steady stream of people through the sector gaining skills needed to become transport managers and operators’.

“This is not a new challenge,” said committee chair Louise Ellman MP. “The road haulage sector has been short of skilled drivers for the last ten years.

“The familiar profile of the professional driver – over 45, white and male – will need to adapt.

“Industry and government need to get their heads together and come up with a plan which focuses on recruitment and retention.

“After years of under-investment in the sector, let’s encourage skilled drivers back into their cabs by improving the image of the profession, revisiting pay and conditions and providing proper and secure facilities at depots and on the roadside.”

She said that the industry needs to look to female, young and black and minority ethnic (BAME) drivers as the future for haulage.

“Government and industry should review apprenticeships, reduce training costs and insurance, and demonstrate clear career progression,” she said. “If people are unwilling to work in the sector, it is up to industry and government to change perceptions.”

The FTA’s skills policy development manager, Sally Gilson said: “We are pleased to see that the Transport Committee has listened to FTA’s concerns – as this is a problem that isn’t going to solve itself.

“We strongly agree with the committee and its calls for government to provide more support, and with the need for better roadside facilities for drivers. This is especially important if more women are to be recruited – currently only one per cent of HGV drivers in the UK are female.”

The CILT also welcomed the report. Daniel Parker-Klein, head of policy, said: “We fully support the report, which we are pleased to see supports and cites our proposals. The impact of the driver shortage cannot be ignored and it is of utmost importance that the report’s findings help influence industry and government to focus on recruitment and retention.

“CILT will continue to work with the Transport Select Committee, industry and government to ensure that the next steps taken will allow us to beat the driver shortage.”

they do it because befast is full of busy poor men who by the time the subbie gets a load, its been chopped by about another 5 companies taking their piece off the top,so the only way the job pays is to chop the drivers wage bit by bit until only the desperate will work there…on the other hand,if you know the score its not so hard to get a well paid job with good plant.this applies whether you want to work by the book,or are happier on trip dosh. either way there a few jobs usually on the go…with the cowboys and dfds subbys there always looking for a bum on a seat,as that’s all you are to them.

Good to see the 'Tiger Economy ’ trickling down…

Dayshift February 2015 Mallusk. Contracted 60 hour week for £385gross. Start 07:00 finish between 16:00, if you drag the job out, and 19:00. Maybe things have change but I doubt it. Montgomery is just as bad.

I love the heading, Mainland, its a very sad person who calls that place a mainland, no personal identity, and then they say from Ireland, Mainland of what, its called living in the past and they think it will go back to that after the vote to get out of Europe.
Very sad people who think they have power, god save the queen, mainland of water

id love to see carryfast try and hijack this one now after that twaddle…
