because there’s no way of reporting it. And with cuts in police no’one who would be bothered to do anything.

I’m not sure a test of introduction of trailer mots would make much difference. Probably is true that many family estate cars used to tow them are unsuitable but the main culprit is poor loading. The fact that being light on the nose makes it easier to move encourages it but mostly it’ll be that they’ve shoved the kid’s bikes or boxes of groceries through the caravan door without thinking about it.

Then once they’re up to 50mph on the motorway and the tramlines or a truck going past starts a wobble and they either try to steer out or jab the brakes and that’s it. Autos are quite useful for being able to slow down gently without taking weight off the back axle.

If there’s a major problem with overloaded caravan outfits, why aren’t the police doing something about it?

Nothing to do with overloaded it’s badly loaded.

In case you hadn’t noticed there are plenty of issues higher up the foodchain the police are doing nothing about this doesn’t mean they aren’t genuine issues.

Can’t see the problem , luv em

There used to be regular checks on caravans, the A64 between Malton and Scarborough was a common place to be pulled. Noseweight was checked along with tyre condition and tow car compatibility but I haven’t heard of any recently. Some of the problem lies with the caravan dealerships, you go and say that you want a caravan and 70% of dealers would tell you that your car was suitable even if it wasn’t. I know that from first hand experience and let them know it as well, bet it still happens though! :unamused:

Don’t forget that up to around 40 years ago most truck drivers hadn’t passed a test either, apart from car/bike, and they were still classed as ‘professionals’ and ‘Knights of the Road’ by the public!

Pete.

Yes, it’s well reported in the caravan press, some dealers/sales people basically saying anything to get a sale! Also some caravanners try to get away with linking the car’s kerbweight to the unladen weight of the caravan. Basically idiots, just storing up problems for themselves.
