Just to let everybody know the police were here last week asking drivers to read a number plate 20feet away.It was featured on the tv .They have the power to take your license off you if you can,t read it.
Maybe just a publicity stunt …cos there,s only 5 copper,s in south wales and 3 of them are on the sick
1,s on holidays, and the other 1,s on night,s
20 feet , you need to see that far in front ?

Erm, they are doing there JOB, if they are TRAFFIC they are dealing with Drivers, if they are robbery they deal with it they are a Traffic Unit and it is the job they are employed to do, so what if they nick drivers who require glasses but do not wear them the Law is the LAW truck drivers have no insurance etc will also get nicked by these type of operations
Would rather see a copper take a licence of a driver who cannot see than said driver kill innocent people due not seeing them at 56mph

Can’t see the problem.
Watching traffic cops the other day, they were following a car that was ‘wandering’ a bit. stopped car and it was an old boy, they did an eyesight test on him and he failed, badly.
If a driver killed someone and it was found that his eyesight was bad, would people say ‘thats alright, the police should not check eyesight’?
(Erm ) both points taken, and believe it or not I do get the difference between crime and traffic offences, but thanks anyway, and it’s always a good way to justify and emphasise a point by bringing in the killing family/ bus load of kids/etc etc but let’s not get carried away. Maybe I didn’t make my point clear for some so I will attempt to clarify. It would be nice, and in fact good for Police PR, if they were seen to be aiming for the lesser easy targets, instead of going for speeders (yeh I know think of the children! ) or people who can’t read reg plates, why not make truck theft, or diesel theft a priority, I’m sure that this will come under the Traffic Police remit, and would be more beneficial to us as drivers.
Well this old boy should be wary then …viewtopic.php?f=7&t=96369
It’s been asked before but if you wear glasses do they want to see the spare pair your supposed to carry
Jim

Agreed!!! Diesel theft is on the up and up now the price is on the up and up again. Diesel theft is pretty bad in South Wales too

Hear what your saying, diesel thefts are a nightmare, but what would you have the police do?
Lets just say that the police decide to do an undercover operation in a lay by where there has been a spate of diesel thefts. Probably about 4 coppers needed and 2 un marked police cars.
Lets say that the police catch a couple of diesel thieves during the corse of the night, well done police.
But, and there is always a but, lets say I lived in the area and my house was burgaled on the same night, I would be saying something along the lines of ‘why are the police mucking about with diesel thieves when my house has been burgaled’
There dammed if they do, dammed if they don’t.

Whats the difference between the theft of diesel from a truck, and the theft of a tv from a houseâ– â– ?

yes, spare pair aswell
You need to be able to read a number plate at
20 Meters or 65 Feet.
This reminds me I really should get a spare pair of glasses…
Bit screwed if mine break, Ive got that astigmatism thing on top of long sightedness…

Not sure if this is correct. Aren’t courts the only authority that can demand your license is revoked?

What spare pair, I can’t afford a spare pair!!!
Right I’m getting contacts then!
I can’t afford £150 for a spare pair, unless I can count the prescription sunglasses I got in the BOGOF offer from Specsavers

And the DVLA. A roadside test alone by the police certainly not.

Police can potentially get DVLA authority ‘within minutes’ according to this:
