Will the M3 from London ever be extended so it meets the M5,the parts of the A303 on a single carriegway should be dualled or made in to a motorway, this will boost the economy and prevent the bottle neck traffic jams of summer holiday traffic off the Bunford Lane/Cargate roundabout at Yeovil.
The worst bit is the Stonhenge turn off, that is a dangerous road, when joining the A303 you have to turn your neck to the right, but when you are judging the speed of oncoming traffic and the best time to pull out you end up hitting the car that has stalled or decided not to pull out.
There is a petition to dual all of the A303, a farmer is seeing accidents where motorist`s take chances to pass farm vehicles, when there is a long queue waiting to get past.
With London folks owning two to three second homes in Devon and Cornwall, this will keep them happy.
I doubt it’ll ever happen in fact it might be a shame as a lot of the a303 and a30 are really scenic and you hardly see any built up areas. I would go as far to say it’s a very enjoyable route and is one of my favourites.
some good cafes along there too.
there have been loads of plans through the years to improve the A303, you would struggle to get the M3 to meet the M5 seeing as the M3 goes to the M27 at southampton. all the plans have been shelved though for lack of money. they did look at putting a tunnel under stonehenge and were very close to doing it till the government pulled the plug. and a new road from ilminster to honiton but that was shelved at the same time as the stonehenge project

aswell a ilminster roundabout to junction 25 M5 that was suppose to be duelled put scrapped aswell !!
the way this government is going it will be interesting to see if any new motorways are built…EVER !
How about if the M27 was extended in both directions from the M5 to the M20? Surely that would take a burden off the M25.

Back in the late 70s early 80s when we used to holiday in Devon/ Cornwall as a family I always remember signs proclaiming the building of the Folkestone to Honiton trunk road along the south coast. I guess that’s another promise that was never fulfilled. If you tried that run along the coast theses days it would take you most of the day.

but this is what did/will happen to any motorway new build scheme
I always thought that the plan to cure a lot of the South Coast problems was to complete / extend the M27 … thus giving ‘continuous motorway travel’ from Dover-Brighton-Pompey-B’mouth-Exeter-Plymouth.
I’m sure this was the plan at some stage of the last 30 years?!
There a bit of information about a South coast Motorway on here.
and Here
And one that might be of interest to Toby
It will never happen, a new motorway from Exeter to join the M3 to London, they will never modernise the A30 on the single track too.

I doubt there will be any more long distance motorways built, unless they are privately financed and that hasn’t really worked well on the M6 Toll. Maybe an A14(M) to run along side the A14 between Huntington and Cambridge.
but I reckon they will eventually build a tunnel under the Stonehenge and remove the road above like they did at Hindhead. Very expensive, but very popular with tree huggers, locals and long distance travelers and dual the other parts.
The A30 is pretty much a down graded route as the article says and the trunk route is now the A303.
The m6 toll is built the wrong side of Birmingham though. It should have gone from the m5 around 4a up around Kidderminster and up across the m54 to around j 13 at Stafford. It should have been more of an alternative than a relief road. Too many vehicles all congregating from several arteris of 3 laned motorways which all come together and have to squeeze into 3 lanes of motorway between junctions 8 and 10a of the m6 before again spreading out to their various destinations, not to mentioned the local traffic trying to move around the midlands

We need a south coast super highway. It is a constant urban area from Southampton to Hastings and beyond.
Just before Arundle on the A27 it looks like they started building a bypass and gave up. As for bypassing Worthing? Why not just knock the ■■■■ hole down and build a motorway right through it.

If it went that way it would limit the access from the M1 Traffic using it as a cross country route, so can’t really see it would make much difference.
But the biggest problem with the M6 Toll road is it’s hardly used, if much more of the through traffic from the M1 and M6 went that way I’m sure you’d see a vast improvement in traffic flow between the M5 and M6.

The problem with the M6 toll is that they tolled the wrong bit. The new bit should be free and the old bit that it by passes should be tolled
The A303 is a nice route aslong as your on it early doors and they havent shut it overnight for roadworks
Of course there always the alternative m4/m5 route, takes longer but saves fuel.
We don’t want a M-way , quite proud to boast our county don’t have one.
