“It is a government priority to make the A30 and A303 a dual carriageway all the way between London and Penzance.” That statement was made by the then Conservative Government in 1959 and 53 years later… What would the road be like if had not been a priority?
Squiddy:
Just before Arundle on the A27 it looks like they started building a bypass and gave up. As for bypassing Worthing? Why not just knock the [zb] hole down and build a motorway right through it.
When they duelled the stretch between poling and crossbush they’re we’re plans to bypass the whole of arundel hence the road at crossbush looking like a slip road. At the time I remember the tree huggers setting up residence in the woods on the western side of arundel but I’m sure it was the governments axing of all major road building schemes in the mid 90s the killed it off.
As for Worthing the bypass was all planned and again was killed off by the government in the mid 90s. Many homes along the road as you enter Worthing were compulsory purchased and people forced from there homes for no good reason at the end of the day. The double sets of lights as you approach worthing from the east was going to be where a link road to the bypass joined, now it just creates chaos as traffic backs up through both sets of lights. It must have cost millions to effectively makes things worse than they were before.
Both are major bottlenecks along the south coast but i doubt if well see any real improvements until government starts reinvesting in our roads and I don’t see that happening for a while yet.
Cheers

We don’t want a M-way , quite proud to boast our county don’t have one.
No you’re right but a dual carriageway would be nice.
