I thought Tooting was too far.Unless it has a heli pad.If not then she went by road which is terrible.Or the care she required was not avaiable nearby with specialists away on leave or operating on other patients at that time?
What is happening is now instead of going to local A&E serious casualties are going to the most suitable hospital for whatever the major trauma is. So in my part of the world in Cheshire, head trauma goes to North Staffs, other types goto Wythenshawe, Manchester or even Fazakerley, Liverpool. Plus Air Amb runs from Wythenshaw and N staffs has purpose built heli pad right outside front doors of A&E.
Look up Air Rescue 24 who are working to unify this type of work by getting trauma consultant to scene from the start.
Traffic Rat, Welcome. I’m assuming from your user name what your job is and that you’d be knowledgeable about this. That was my understanding of how things were now, but Tooting seems to have been the ‘go to’ hospital for quite some time when it comes to accidents on this stretch of the 25. This is long before these dedicated trauma A&E depts were set up.

Why take someone to Tooting? - That’s miles away… Are there not any hospitals in Woking, Leatherhead, or even Guildford?
Owing to continuous cut backs and downgrading of our local hospitals St Georges is just about the only logical choice for major trauma cases in North Surrey which includes the Surrey stretch of the M25 considering Guildford hospital’s catchment area it would never be able to cope even if it’s got the same capabilities as St Georges which is doubtful. The same applies for the residents. The only other main choice is Kingston or St Helier, since the closure of Epsom’s trauma and surgical capabilities, neither of which have St Georges capabilities. All of which means that Surrey’s residents then have to compete with South and South West London’s for the same services. It’s a dangerous nightmare.
Welcome to Tnuk Traffic Rat,i have a question for you, when i dial 999,the operator will ask the location of the incident and i say i am so many miles from the border of another county.
They then say that i have come through to the county which is not on their patch to deal with it and they transfer my information to another county.
This happens a lot and why does it happen.?
I rang for a fire between two county borders,i was asked how far was the border away from the fire and i was asked which station would be closer to attend.
To save tax payers money i may advise them how many appliances to send.
For a minor bump and shunt, there is no need for 8 fire engines, helicopter or platform ladder Snorkel.People trapped in vehicles, you get the works.Full turn out.
Which local MP was it around there proported to admit “I’d keep this seat even if I were a paedo - That’s the nature of this part of Britain that stands against other parties” (ie non-conservative)
Sounds to me like even more reason to totally turn every damned MP out of their seats, and bring in a totally new bunch of 650 to make a house full of “virgin MP’s” so to speak.
All the main parties are as bad as each other - Shaft public services, because they’re too damned afraid to tax the rich to pay for it all.
Toby I think they want to know near borderlines because if it’s on a dc or mway, then pumps will attend from both directions. For example something around M40 J11 and northwards may require a pump from Warwickshire. In fact for most major fires in the Banbury area a pump from Warks or Northants will attend before an Oxfordshire one for reasons such as distance or simply a retained station may be off the run due to staff shortages. Deddington is one that springs to mind.
Bazza, No have used only 1 name on multiple forums for many years.
Toby. That will be to do with the 999 system and how it is set up and (I believe) what cell tower your phone is hooked in to. Also what exchanged you get put to, common ones in my area are Bangor, Blackburn and oddly Glasgow exchanges.
Also if at the point of call you don’t have a signal to your network if may show 'Emergency Calls Only" this puts you through the Emergency Roamer system which sometimes means you can be talking to anywhere in the country. Fortunately most police forces use a single system to the incident can be passed electronically.
One question I’ve always wondered is… Why do they ask for the number of the phone your calling from? Is it to put off hoax calls? I’d have thought your number would come up on their screen? Also can they triangulate your position from phone masts if you dont know where you are??

St George’s in Tooting is one of the best hospitals in the country, it’s a bit of a ■■■■ hole but it’s well respected and where many specialists reside. Sorry to post a factual comment and not go off on one about the state of pay or how the poles are taking food from our mouths but there you go!

It’s not much use having a rationed system of just a few well equipped and staffed hospitals only in certain locations when people have accidents and get ill all over the country.Often outside of emergency range of them and/or with a catchment area that puts too much pressure on the numbers situation of doctors v patients at worse.Or awkward travel arrangements for relatives to visit at best.Which applies especially in the case of cutting back on medical services in the home counties to keep London’s afloat.
Bazza,
Normally the 999 operator gives your number to the call taker but they like confirm it, and the Emergency Eisner doesn’t present a number at all, no idea why.
No we can triangulate just of A call, a lot of work and authorisation is needed to be done to do that so it’s used for High risk missing persons and such like, and even then we get a mast location and a range on a clock face eg between 4 & 8 at upto 1000m distance.
