Ltd company good or bad idea?

I’ve recently had to return to agency work and remember last time when I signed with a few agencies getting into a mess with tax because they said I had more than one job although i only worked for multiple agencies so that I could get a full time wage at the end of the week.
Anyway. I’ve been told by a few people that I should become a Ltd company then I can work for as many agencies as I like and won’t get screwed by the tax man.
Is this a good idea??
I don’t have a clue where to start with setting myself up as a ltd company. And I’m worrying that because I know I’m ■■■■ with money that I’ll end up getting myself into an even bigger mess than before. Plus I’m already in debt so would I even be able to attempt to go down this path??
Basically I’m just after some advice.

Don’t do it.

If anyone ever answered there own question you did
You don’t work for anybody as a company Ltd or anything else

+1
perfectly correct answer for too many reasons to list…no more to be said.post closed…move along now… :sunglasses:

The Interesting IR35 case thread may be worth reading before deciding whether or not to go limited company.

For an agency driver it’s not worth it in my opinion.

Don’t bother, you have missed the boat so to speak, stay on PAYE.

Did all of these people have gelled hair and wear pointy shoes?

Avoid the Ltd Co route.

Your best bet is PAYE…the IR is clamping down on ‘fake’ self-employment too.

Ltd the best.if you will work Paye that get some 10p/h.If Ltd 11-12 where included holiday money. If you change agency or for for couple agency all the time that not loose holiday money. Some drivers work 3-5years and no problem with tax man if they pay correct tax and not claim 5 laptop expenses every years.

You say you don’t have a clue where to start, and if you’re in debt you may not be that good with money management.
Do Not Do It.
Loads more reasons ftom the other replies not to do it, but those are enough.

Ltd best if drink much Tysksi and pay all monies to polka bank. If must pay taxi, go home and laugh. Drink much Tysky in home, then back with new driver licence.

Thank you peas

Not being funny mate, but why bother with ■■■■ agencies at all, why not try and get a (decent) proper job and leave those parasites alone to go and ■■■■ themselves.

Speaking for myself only, but I don’t want a “proper job”. I chose to work just three days last week and this week as I’ve been getting the boat ready to go cruising, and when the agency phone later to check my availability for next week I’ll be saying “Sorry, nothing doing until September” and I can’t see many haulage companies being best pleased with any of that, many permanently employed drivers struggle to get even a week off between March and October.

Best answer yet this one.
I am ltd but have irons in other fires so to speak.
I use clearsky accounting and even they warn about the ir35 thing in your initial phone call.
If you go for it just make sure you transfer your tax money into the savings account you will get with your business bank account.
The flat rate tax scheme pays towards my holidays.
If you can tie something else in with your business activity then go for it.
There are pros and cons on both sides.
If you can cut out the agencies when ltd(you pay for that nice warm office they sit in) and approach companies direct.
You can undercut the agencies prices.
Just make sure you get your terms and conditions agreed and signed for on paper before taking an assignment.
Oh. And good luck.

See your point Harry if you want to and are able to pick and choose to your own personal requirements.
That is what I did on the short period I USED an agency, it was only to get me back used to right hookers in case I made a balls on the job I was starting at a later date, so I wasn’t really fussed.
Thing is though they found it hard to conceive that I told them exactly what I did and didn’t want, and stuck to it, they were just used to guys taking ■■■■ off them (and technically tbf that was the original format of an agency,… you hired yourself out to them as a service :bulb: )

Nowadays the majority of these ■■■■ s dictate to the drivers, hold them to ransom, and starve them of work on a whim :imp: … but if you’ve found a gig that works for you with them, then spot on.

Ive been Ltd since 2013, I don’t know why everyone is getting so hot under collar about it. The government brought the rules in and we just following them because we are better off doing it. Forget about all the stuff on here about only getting a pound hour more and lose your holidays. It written by members who don’t understand what its all about.

Now does anyone who runs a small company classed as a tax dodging thick moran? From your plumber to your haulage contractor, we do what the government classed as legal. As long as you follow the rules you be ok. I got a decent accountant who wouldn’t sign off anything dodgy.

Ltd agency suits some people but not others. umbrella companies steer well clear of because they are a rip off. I did it for about 2 years and when I worked it out I may as well been paye. The only people who make money out of that scheme is the accountants who set up the umbrella companies.

I am trying to get a proper job. There ain’t a jobsite I’m not registered with and I’ve applied for everything going. I’ve also rang round all the haulage firms courier firms etc in a 20 mile radius.
