If i worked for a firm who says they will not pay me to have a break that the law say’s i must have then it’s up to them to look after there truck during that time, thats why i get paid from when i go in the yard to when i leave. The next thing will be firms saying they will not pay you because you are sat at some rdc for 4 hours waiting to unload or no night out money because you are only sleeping.
I find jobs that advertise a high hourly rate don’t pay for breaks, jobs that advertise a low hourly rate usually do, this one is a low hourly rate with no payment for breaks
I don’t mind getting docked for breaks on a high hourly rate, because it makes your overtime rate better.
40x9 = 360, 45x8 = 360. So, paid by break or not, 360 is roughly the same time in a week but the overtime on £9 / hr is usually 13.50 / hr, the overtime on £8 / hr is £12… A company I worked for years ago gave us the choice, and we chose the higher hourly rate because we did a lot of overtime anyway and when on hols you got the same money whichever.
Oh, also, firms that pay breaks don’t usually pay overtime after 8hrs, it’s usually after more hours like 10 or something.
As I’ve said before in this thread, I have to look at the basic guarenteed hours and know that I can pay my bills, 40x6.20 isn’t going to pay my lunch bill, never mind anything else.
I think, as others said, for the cost of getting into this industry, the cost of staying in it (dCPC, digi tacho’s, medicals etc), the risk being in it, the responsibility, the grief and agrovation, it just isn’t happening for £6.20 / hr, I’d rather work for Macdonalds and get onto that passport scheme where you see the world by working for different Macdonalds around the world.

Well what you could do is add a couple of minutes to your break to cover the time it took you to lock the door before you go and explore the layby
I work for a company that pays me £13.17 per hour for all hours worked monday to friday if they can pay breaks others can,has i have put the law says you have to have the breaks so have not got a choice.Do the firms that don’t pay for breaks pay office staff to keep going for a ■■■ break.
Are you for real? I hope your boss does not see your comments about looking after the Vehicle you are entrusted with. Would you like Nursemaids to be sent out with you to look after the truck. Tachos have settings for POA (was that too difficult) etc. You are taking this far beyond what has been the mainstay of such a long topic of conversation your comments are very strange to say the least

You’re very lucky to be so well paid. Not all firms are the same. For example in some bus companies they don’t pay for meal breaks either.

I am not getting at you or your company, all im saying is when you go though the firms gates you are at work so should be paid.If you are sat in the truck and someone come’s to nick the fuel would you want the driver to say something or just sit there untill his break has finnished.
You mention POA i never use it,it only came in to make drivers work more hours

Even factories and office jobs deduct meal breaks. On the busses were were deducted EVERY minute of break, you could have 3 in a day, total of 1hr 47 or something and be deducted them all.
I don’t agree with deducting breaks, but it does happen at a good portion of jobs, so if paid through, that’s a bonus. Like I said though, a lot of firms that pay a low hourly rate pay breaks, I think £6.20 per hour, then deducting 45 mins per day for breaks is taking the ■■■■, but I also think £6.20 per hour paid all the way through would still be taking the ■■■■
The day my wages go anywhere near that, is the day I’m in charge of a sweeping brush, not a 44t HGV

We do not expect our Drivers to do any work whilst they are on Break. A break is an essential part of the day where time is their own to do as they please. We do not pay any Cash in Hand all payments are strictly through the books. Our Drivers take pride in the Trucks and would never walk away from them leaving the keys in the ignition, only an idiot would do that and still expect to be insured/employed. They treat their Trucks that are allocated specifically to them on the commencement of employment, the same as they would their own private cars. I would like to add that none of our Drivers claim benefits and the majority own their own property. So all is not as bad as Dave tries to make out for them.
We have held two O Licenses for a very long time with no blemishes against our record. We have permits for all EU Countries unfortunately in this day and age with the flip flop brigade we do not use them. The Drivers do not sign their contracts in blood or saying till death us do part.
@lesleyanne, If I am the Dave you are referring to would you please point out in which of my post’s I have made out it is bad for your driver’s or made disparaging remarks about them or even your company. I started this thread commenting about an unknown employer looking for Class 1 drivers at a basic rate of £6.20 per hr; That is a very poor basic rate for Class 1 driver’s and it’s obvious you are never going to accept that. If your driver’s are happy fine, I’ve never said you pay cash in hand to anyone but I would be very surprised if none of your drivers get some top up with Working Tax Credits or Child Tax Credits, which is also fine by me, that is if you only employ single people with no dependents ergo no Tax/Child Credit eligibility
I’m feeling very nauseous though reading some of the complete bull-plop you have written about your big happy family You are running a general haulage company not a Sure Start Centre, some of the stuff you’ve written, and expect us to believe, is straight out of a corporate PR spin department’s archive and not very good at that
You have had your digs about the rate of pay from the very beginning. Now because I have defended the Company and rates of pay you still appear to have a problem with us. I answered the questions and a lot of people have slatted my Drivers I will defend them. I love your comment “You are running a general haulage company not a Sure Start Centre, some of the stuff you’ve written, and expect us to believe, is straight out of a corporate PR spin department’s archive and not very good at that ”
WHY are you so defensive is it because I am a woman and not a Trucker. I am paid to do a job and that is what I do I really find your comments quite offensive but then everyone has a right to an opinion.

I didn’t even know it was Coombe Valley Transport when I started the thread about very, very low rate for Class 1 work. Dave Penn;
Dave is merely making the point that your company pay class 1 LGV drivers an appalling hourly rate. He has no axe to grind with you - when he started the thread he was unaware of your existence. The fact you are female is irrelevant. The wage structure you have is bloody appalling - I know of a 17 year old office boy that is on £1.50/hr more than your drivers… you do not value them if you will only pay such a poor wage. You are simply taking advantage of them.
I ask again. Is £6.20 a fair rate for class 1 drivers? Despite the corporate waffle you’ve come out with you still haven’t given us a straight answer. Nor did you deny that you are waffling spin - you merely asked a question back without answering…politics anyone?
Some of us find it offensive that you are offering such a poor rate to LGV drivers…could I ask…do you work for £6.20/hour Lesleyanne?
I may be missing something here but at £6.20 an hour for the first eight hours and time-and-a-half after that, I make that £86.80 for a 12 hour day which I would say was pretty much average for that type of work in that area.
Harry Monk:

Seriously■■?
I know a fair few drivers, some self employed and some not. Two are based in the SE. And both earn around double that rate…and one is SE and one employed…
I don’t know any driver that is class 1 qualified that would even consider working for that sort of money.

If that’s true Harry, then that area pays POOR.
BUT, once again, if you’re on £6.20 for 8hrs, then on holiday what do you get? £250 per week? Also, if deducted breaks, you’re actually doing 12hrs 45 for that £86.80 per ‘12hr day’
When I’m tramping, I want to do as many hours as possible so it’s worth me sleeping in the truck, ie 15hrs / 13hrs +/-, but not for £86.80 (12hrs 45 is only 15 mins short of the 13hr), because that would be a real kick in the balls.
Sometimes the job dictates you can’t max your hours out, ie you’re near your next job, it’s closed, doesn’t open till whatever time the next day etc
1 job I do is garden centres, delivering wicker furniture, they’re not open long hours, so you can’t max your hours out even though you’re tramping, so the company pays me a rate I’m happy with otherwise I wouldn’t do it.
At the end of the day Harry, what you’ve said there, is you’d be happy to work away all week for a top line of £435 +/- + night out money, seriously? We’re talking around £330 + night out money there, so let’s say it’s £25 per night out x 4, £430 quid for 5 x 12hr days + 4 nights out… Are you kidding me?
I know you’re an o/d and I respect that you’ve got to make a profit, but any driver working for that money wants their head seeing to.

@Truckulent, take no notice of Harry Monk Ltd; He’s on a wind up probably trying to sub some work out of CVT or knows them well
Pound to a penny Harry M. you would never drive an artic, as an employed driver, for £6.20 per hr. never mind £86.80 a day. £6.20 per hr. is the rate for a 7.5 ton driver 2.5 yrs ago it is now anywhere between £6.50 - £7.50 and Class 1 is anywhere between £7.20 - £9.00 per hr average. £6.20 per hr for Class 1 work is a very poor basic rate however you dress it up and whatever the name of the company is that is offering it
I’ve never had any connection with CVT, never even been in their yard. But I can tell you that anyone who is on day rate in east Kent is generally on around £85-£90. That’s nothing to do with me, I’m not the Wages Council, I’m just telling you what I know from my experience.
daveb0789:
Coach drivers like myself are getting £60 basic day and it’s in the same area. Seems standard for the area.
2 things there.
Coach driving is NOT HGV driving, so the wages have nothing to do with each other
If you’re not sat around for approx 10hrs per day for that, you’re being shafted.
This is a job in General Haulage, not containers, not coach driving taking biddies to the beach etc.
Anyone who would WORK a full day for £60 is a dumb ■■■, sorry pal, I’ve done coach driving for both daily rate and hourly rate, the daily rate work usually means drive an hour or 2, sit around for 7 - 10hrs, get your food bought for you etc, drive back, drop them off as close to their houses as safe to do so and count your tips - anything else is hourly rate work, schools, baths, rail replacement, airport work, suits etc.
I actually do not need to defend our rates of pay. I have tried to keep this light but obviously you are not reading the posts correctly.
I think it is now time to back off and let you stand alone on your pedestal. I do not think it is myself that is losing Credibility and am not prepared to get into a slanging match with you.
