A time lord is someone who can stop time, go back in time, and look forward in time.
Many employers are therefore time lords, since they can stop tomorrow ever coming in the case of “jam tomorrow”, then can go back to the 1960’s when they’re looking for a fair wage to pay, and looking forward? - Time’s are always 'ard so there’s never a reason to pay more.
The owner of a firm I worked for a while back deigned to turn up in his Bentley, to give a little speech about how times were hard, and how there was no pay rise this year. Or the next. Or ever.
He also said that if we had a pay increase it would be no good to us because inflation would rise. And… some drivers believed him.
Honestly, some people.

dear sir
just seen your advert for the driving job, could you please tell me if the hourly rate is correct as advertised or is it a typing error or even a joke, because if this is correct there has to be a serious problem!!!
many thanks from a concerned driver with over 20 yrs. experience
blimey i had a reply
Hi Peter.
The job is advertised correctly. Average take home pay of over £400 per week suits most people with normal everyday activity. This is above National Minimum Wage.

Now you see why I CHOOSE to drive a van.Why go through the aggravation of driving an artic to daft places. When they pay the same as a van? Let me think!

Think harder and longer, sounds to me like your a nutter.
£400 would be above minimum wage if it’s for an office-standard 35 hour week, but it’s not is it?
No level playing field for the hapless driver there… At best it’ll be for a 56 hour week, at worst for an 84 hour week with unpaid POA in it.
And all this in the Dover area as well FFS!
Last job I did there paid £13.50ph, so they must be after people with dodgy licences!

Oh yeah!
From Lesley Glover. I have just found this site and the comments that some have made. First some facts about Coombe Valley Transport.
We have been operating since 1901 making this 111 years as a Transport Company (I have put the total number of years in as obviously some cannot count). Not may Companies out there that can boast that achievement. We have a fantastic Team of Drivers that were all aware of the pay structure before applying for the post (simply because they were intelligent enough to ask the questions). Yes we may have old Trucks but they are all legititmately on the road and maintained to high standards in line with the Vosa Schedules. And We OWN THEM. No leasing here. They are all Taxed and Insured. Yes they do have Analogue Tachographs showing that our Criteria of Drivers are intelligent enough to be able to read Tachos. We work to the Working Time Directive meaning our drivers only work 60 hours per week and get paid for those hours excluding the legal breaks that are required. Our Licenses are checked every 3 months as required by the Insurance Companies. Most of our Drivers have been here over 5 years because we work as a Team Gross weekly wages with benefits average £590.00. We also pay for our Drivers CPC Training. In the past we have paid for Drivers to gain their Class 1 License, they have then promptly left the Company for the glorified wages of an Agency. Within months begging to come back to us as they have been given a few weeks work then had no work at all.
Wildfire: It is people like you that give Class 1 Drivers a bad reputation by ■■■■■■■■ on forums like this. You are a timewaster and should really concentrate on the job you are doing rather than bad mouthing Companies that you know nothing about. My response to your email was to the point you never made further contact nor asked about pay structure.
I cannot understand the mentality of some of the comments on here. Maybe you are wannabee Class 1 Drivers or even breach the law with Driving and breaks.
If you are constructive with your criticism then this is totally acceptable but to bad mouth a long established Company like ours without being intelligent enough to ask questions then I will respond.
Regards
Lesley Glover
Well said Lesley
Tight Entrance not much room to move!!! Easy for a qualified Class 1 Driver. Never had an incident with an Incompetent driver after 111 years.

Sounds like the sort of thing you’d do if you’d just passed your test and wanted to get all the damage/getting lost/take an hour to get it on the bay stuff done before you got a proper job.
Yes, and have a look into their yard, tight entrance and not much room to move
If I’m looking at the correct building, you can use the road opposite and almost go straight back in to the yard.

Firstly Lesley, let me say well done on having the guts to come on here, and thanks for taking the time.
Now, a little dig from me. From 1901, are the wages the same, because the cost of living isn’t. Are the trucks from 1901 too?
Now, you know I’m only joking / half joking there, but you must’ve been expecting that to come.
1 serious question though, when did 60hrs per week become ONLY 60hrs per week?? On a 5 day week, that’s an average of 12hrs per day, seriously, when did that become ONLY ■■ I know it’s pretty standard in transport, and I’ve definately done that and more hours, but at no time did I get home and say “I ONLY did 58hrs this week” well, except maybe when I look at my wage and complain, especially if I’ve been out all week too.
You don’t HAVE to deduct the legal break from the wages, I’ve worked for lots of firms that pay from the minute you arrive until the minute you leave, and they all paid a higher hourly rate than you do too, and were mostly easier jobs - boxes - except 2 of them which were night trunking. So why you say “we pay all hours except the legally required breaks” as if that’s a good thing?
Now, I like your retort to Wildfire, that was brill and especially the 1 to bigvern1 - bang on, so true. I drive a C+E because I want to, the challenge is part of the job. Sure, driving a van may be easier, but I could’ve done that 15yrs ago without spending out on my C, CE, ADR, dCPC, Digi tacho, medical’s etc… I didn’t, but that doesn’t mean I want to drive a C+E after spending all that for £6.20 per hour
Thank you.

Well said Lesley
Lesley dont take too much to heart as there are a lot of keyboard worriers out there
As long as your drivers are happy then that is what matters maybe have a meeting with them & ask how they really feel
But if you look most transport wages are low it may be called supply / demand
