Low loader Ramp Falls On Car

Did anyone see the Land Rover Discovery at Pear Tree Roundabout earlier, with a low loader ramp sat on it’s bonnet? How can one just drop, are they locked up by a safety pin/bar or are they locked by hydraulics? It looked as though (judging from the distance between lorry and car) that the ramp fell as the lorry pulled onto the roundabout. The other ramp was still secured.

the one I occasionally drive has ramps secured almost upright with straps, as they tend to lower themselves when the hydraulic pump is not working

The low loader at my last place was hydraulic ramps held up by chains and dogs.

I used a brand new trailer a few weeks ago with no rams. Two ramps controlled by gravity and secured with a pin. I wasn’t overly impressed.

I think its illegal to just have them held inplace by the rams. I would of thought they are regarded by the HSE in the same way as needing to support the rams on a telescopic loader or digger before working on them, as the ramps are in the public environment.

I bet lifting them up and down kept you fit

no hassle droppng them! Lifting actually wasn’t too bad. Alloy ramps.

Ah I assumed heavy haulage with steel ramps. My bad

couldn’t really lift these by hand

Just have your weetabix and you’ll ■■■■ it

Lol - lift them by hand and you will be ■■■■■■■ blood

I presumed that was why they carry those big machines on the back: just to pull up the ramps after them.

it was a low loader carrying 2 jcbs or one jcb loading shovel. I didn’t think the trailer was upto the job. Brand new sdc pile of scrap. Got a picture but didn’t get the ramps in it.

It certainly sounds like the ramps weren’t up to it. Unless you’re on about mini or micro diggers

When I worked at Brit European, I moved JCB plant up to 26 tonnes on a Rolfo trailer with alloy slide-out ramps. Never had a problem with them. Must be stronger than they look/feel.

I had the same with R Longs but they can get a bit weighty when damaged and get some water inside :frowning:

My ramp weighs loads for its size, thats why I dont like running with the rear axle up it bounces everywhere.

It has two stumpy legs that automatically fold out but also has a couple of bigger legs pinned up to help with bigger stuff.
I forgot to lower the bigger legs when loading this H70 (13 tons) and popped a ram hose
Thankfully it was fixed in half an hour

We often see ram hoses (hydraulic) and rams failing so I would never rely on just the hydraulics to hold a tail up

That looks bloody tidy for a 53 plate!

Cheers Gembo, it was originally a double axle but was converted and refurbished about two years ago, has only done 34000 kilometres since, Ive put a fair bit of that on in the last few months
Its also wrapped as opposed to resprays, a nice job too.

I was asked at a fuel garage a few weeks ago if I wanted to sell it…I thought my boss wouldn’t be too please if I did

Mine are secured upright by straps.

Was dropping the ramps in another yard a few weeks back to load some plant and the weld on the bush that holds the hinge pin failed. It came down pretty quick although the between the ram and the other side it didn’t hit the deck. Had to drag it back upright with the crane and use more straps to secure it enough to get it somewhere for repair.
