If I see someone do a fine bit of reversing without the need for a shunt; I go over and say:
“Leave it there, driver, I’ll go and get someone to do it properly.”
The problem is some drivers take shunts when it is not necessary.Usually because they have not positioned themselves properly in the first place or because they have not a clue how to reverse a trailer.
I find it embarrassing when I see some drivers trying to do a simple reverse in our yard and making a complete horrlicks of it.
How the hell do they get a licence I wonder.
If you wernt such an obvious troll id ask who you are to decide what constitutes a necessary shunt and what doesnt.
But since you’re only contribution to the forum appears to be insulting lorry drivers, Ill assume this comment is another half arsed attempt at keyboard warriorism (from probably a non hgv driver)

I am not a troll neither am I a driver but I have had a HGV licence for many years and driven plenty trucks over the years.
I have my own haulage business and employ several drivers and office staff and am truly appalled at the poor standards of drivers today.
Sorry pal but that’s the way I see it these days.]

Maybe if hauliers started calling for a return of manual Fuller gearboxes, more challenging vehicle configurations and a training regime that’s fit for purpose it might help to sort out the problem of a dumbed down driver recruitment regime predictably creating a dumbed down driver pool.

I learned to drive from the passenger seat of my dad’s lorry, as most of those lorries had unassisted steering, shunting back n forth wasn’t a good option, he got it in the right place to start with and made minimal steering wheel adjustments.
With PAS you don’t have to worry about positioning so much, a few armfuls of lock will get it going in the approximate direction and that’s what makes people balls up what should be a simple reverse.
When its all said and done, I don’t care if you are going to judge me on my reversing skills. I do what I need to do to make the reverse safe. Who cares if it takes me 5-6 shunts.

Quite right safety should be everyone’s main priority but surely there should be a constant learning curve and improvement as time goes by.
As I said some do not even know how to position the wagon in the first place and the one that do mess it all up and need to shunt.

So you own your own haulage company yet you feel the need to come on to an hgv forum and constantly insult hgv drivers driving?
Pull the other one pal, its got bells on.

Yes that’s correct pal.I do feel the need because if you think today’s lorry drivers standards are good then you can’t know much about decent driving standards.
And yes there are some decent ones but I think they work for me.
I said in a post some time back that after passing my HGV in 1989 I worked for fedex in Croydon, they sent me to do a trailer change at britax [safety seat people and no longer there]I had to get around another trailer onto the warehouse door and to my left was the side of another warehouse, really difficult for a newbie,i done it in one go,total fluke, never done it again, even surprised myself,it was spot on the door, some guy said to me and I quote I don’t know how you blokes do that, great bit of reversing, unquote,i replied well it’s experience mate[not],i only had my HGV 3 weeks and walked away smiling and feeling ten feet tall, never done it since, usually takes one or two shunts to get it there.
