Long Departed Southampton Hauliers (Part 1)

harry:
greek Moving smartly on, SCA started life in Eastliegh before they moved to Island Row, Mile End Rd.

i think they had a depot in chandlers ford,at that time i was drivng for w sellwood just around the corner, the crane drivers were often called down to their yard to lift of crashed units, that had bit the dust over on the continent, they were driving magey deuchs with i believe colume gear boxes
we always knew when they had new drivers by the sound of their attemps at changing gears on the hill outside our yard

Public benefit coal,i think was Frank Allen,i worked for Tim Allen and Peter Taplin while subbing for British International at Sholing, they ran hundreds of Iveco Turbostars to Portugal, where he had an office, the director in Porto was Manualla de Caldvelo,a harsh and firm business lady,Isobella and Ana Ferreira in the office.
They imported shoes,marble,textiles,tractors and tyres.

Hi toby you are right it was Frank Allen who ran PBC european and i worked for him in 1973/4 i drove a mandator GOW 78L at the time they also ran several other mandators some french registered plus 4 berliets with transcon cabs LHD also French registered and as you say several fodens including a micky mouse cabbed one, that was a cut down 8 wheeler with a 5th wheel stiched on. We used to do loads of rubber for ISR to Amiens and usually loaded apples back from Anjou, we rarely ventured out of France in them days but Frank had an office in Cherbourg even then and he was one of the founders of Truckline ferries,Pat Scorey was also driving there at the time.Later he did a deal with Cables Montague from Earith in Kent and that was when Cabmont was born but that fell by the wayside as i think Frank cooked the books to make it look better than it was when he sold it,after that it became British International and i have a feeling he still owns the yard in sholing.By the way Frank Allen lives about a 1/4 of a mile from me and until 3 years ago lived next door to me, he is 83 but still going strong and Tim his son lives in France,The guy in the office when i was there was called tinker but cant remember his real name, cheers Buzzer.

Hello R-Jacko, great pics mate, if you have a liberay near you try ERF by Pat Kennett, and ERF by Peter Davies, both tell how ERF started and that Geourge Baker bought 5th ERF and that Baker still had one still in operation 30 year later, think i said they had 3rd? sorry my mistake, must take more water with the drink.cheers trunker08

R-JACKO:

HERE IS A ERF 2C14 MODEL FIRST REGISTERED IN 1938. HERE IN 1962 ITS STILL HARD AT WORK AS A SHUNTER IN PIRELLI EASTLEIGH DRIVEN BY NOBBY BUCKET.

Hello Trunker
I will look out for the ERF books. The 30 year old lorry you mentioned i wonder if this is the lorry they refer to?
Regards Jacko

Hello R-JACKO,
Excellent pictures, keep them coming. I will put some more on myself when I can.
Trunker08, I will look out for issue 53 of the REVs.

R-JACKO, the N reg ERF with the Scania type grille called a European, similar to the MW type, both being Motor Panel cabs.
Here are some more of Bakers MW

Hi R-Jacko, Baker had number68, (OW 4040)sold in December1933. Book says, Baker , had another one ,JCR753 that remaind in operation for over 30 year’s, but the reg number dosnt tally with the news paper clipping? OW4040 was sold on later in life time of lorry,

hi Lr Mann, great pics, the ships engine looks a bit meaty!! the 6 wheelers came after my time with Baker’s,cheers, trunker08

He used to have a slot in Lorraines lorry park so used to see him quite often.By the way does any one remember when Lorraines closed,i bet thats longer than you think.
