Hi John we got there about 8.30 and spent most of the time in the clubhouse with Barry and Charlie Winter, Jimmy and Jo Alford, Mary and Melvin Lamb, Bill and Ruth Wettering, the Water Bros and numerous others.
Is that the Winters out your way Pat, that did haulage in the 70’s ? They had a 4 wheel AEC / Leyland , like the one you first started with, that I think had a Locomotors sleeper cab. I ran several times to Italy with the guy that drove it, and met up with him on numerous occasions at borders / ferries, as you do !.. sadly, as it’s over 40 years ago, I can’t remember his name, may have been Reg ?..

I don’t think its the same one Dave, Barry has run a four wheeler flat for as long as I have known him from in Totton!
I think you may be thinking of Terry Winter from a farm in Fritham not far from the Royal Oak pub he did run some trucks blue and white I think.

Hi Fergie how are you ,Pat is right it was Terry Winter from Fritham that you are thinking of RIP. He had a leyland four wheeler which had a detachable container on it with sleeper cab, he used to take out antiques if my memory serves me well. I know the truck well cos as a nipper i used to cut out mining chocks and have handballed many loads on a saturday morning on to it.,he later bought a brand new F88 SCR - - - N and ran that to Italy as well, like you i cannot remember the guys name who drove it but Reg does ring a bell, another of those MH moments mate.

I’m well thanks J.D…and you are also I hope !.. That’s definitely the truck…the driver was great fun to be with. I took a friend to Italy once who’d never been out the country, he told him that when he got to Mont Blanc to take all his loose change out his pocket, cause it’d all fall out if he didn’t as the mountain was so steep…as we began the climb by the Lafayette steel works, he did just that…well, it was his first trip…
Fergie i dont know if you can remember when they built the stillts for the new road up the blanc but every body used to say if you made a mistake goin up there you would fall right in to the middle off the steele works below. I remember going up there one night when it was snowing like billio and we all got parked up on that viaduct, the wind was a blowin and it was scary, the coppers said they would wake us when it was good to go and they did but i dont think many put there heads down up there.
Nice one Jimmer, up to your usual standards.
Only a few to go mate, and you,ve done most Southampton euro hauliers of the 80,s.
Definitely need to build a Normandy or Thoresen ferry now to ship ,em all out.
