Mike Burchett…Worked with him on Victory, where he did indeed have a Mandator, and then Smith of Maddiston at Totton in the '70’s.

Afraid to say he had a severe stroke about 15 years ago, and has been in a nursing home in Petersfield ever since. I go to see him every time I go back to the UK ( not very often unfortunately ) for an hour or two, take a few truck magazines in for him. One of the forgotten few I’m afraid, apart from myself and family, he gets very few visitors…

I thought it was Jack Thorne had a distant memory that he ran seddons and that Trevor Mackness drove one of them but i may stand corrected, dark blue in colour.

Think you’re right J.D…I remember a Jack Thorne, he had a blue transit and a 4 wheeler as well, and use to do sub-contract for Smith of Maddiston ( Bob Alford era ) when they where down by the floating bridge. There was also a subby called Blakey ! can’t remember his first name, or where he came from ( maybe Romsey way ? ) he had a big J, dark blue, and I think Ivor Trueman drove for him for a bit…

Didn’t Jack Thorne have a yard in Belgrave Road opposite A E Stratton’s yard?

Wasn’t there another Haulier there as well Southwells?

Distant memories I’m afraid and stop with the M H moments will be singing all day now

Hi all here’s couple more pics courtesy of Bob Cartwright this is the Mack F7000 series he used to have, lovely bed in it could almost lay longways  but a pig to drive but always turned heads , but I didn’t like it rather have kept the Scannie 111,
Anyways it came to a bad ending one day near Watford with a SCAC tilt with a load of ATO for Luton which didnt get there either cos I parked it up the ■■■ of 40 foot flat carrying a concrete structure with a overhang, and that was that !!

IIRC, Jack Thorn was confined to a wheelchair following an accident (A34 whilst employed by a West End company?)
With his wife,he started J.A.Thorn Transport based in Belgrave Road & operated dark blue Rolls powered Seddon units IIRC most of his work was subbed & certainly fruit featured as one of their traffics

Ray Blakey also had a yard in Belgrave Road building up IIRC to half a dozen units

Southwells ran light blue vehicles

Perhaps we 've forgotten some of the Belgrave Road operators & perhaps a little brain stretching is called for…

Taffy Griffiths
Ernie Smart
A E Stratton/Trebor
Southwells Transport
J.A Thorne
R.Blakey

who else ?

Where was that photo taken Jim, and whose were those ERFs in the background.

They were taken in Parnham Drive Eastleigh were Milestone is now but you entered through the back & I think the ERFs were Gateway which is the old Peter s & May / Import Services warehouse.

Cheers Rich

Yeah that’s right Rich it was Bobs old yard at Parham Dr Eastliegh, and Pat was there for a while too in the next yard, that must have been early to mid 80’s.

Sorry to learn about Mickey Burchett-IIRC he knew the job,but could be somewhat determined at times!!
Victory’s first Mandator was a Mk 5 -BOR 234C-driven new by Fred Marriot from Harefield. The second, also a Mk 5-COT 551C- was driven new by Bill Denton from Carters Clay
Mickey Burchett would have joined Victory 1967/8 ish in which case various ergomatic cabbed Mandators were in service
The first ergo cabbed Mandator was DOR261D &the first Mercury was FCG 33D these were followed by various Princes Commercials supplied products both AEC & Dodge
