Long Departed Southampton Hauliers (Part 1)

I had a mate from Fareham. He had a saying.“Fareham born and Fareham bred.Strong in the arm and weak in the head!” This does not apply to you Tony although it certainly applied to him.Regards Charlie

Thanks for that Charlie…i think. I did move to Southampton area about 40 years ago.

Think i must be a bit weak in the head though to have done this now thankless job for so long.

Happy new year to ya mate, and to everyone else.

PS…Back to work tomorrow

That Big j is a “one off”! was it a factory built twin steer or somebody’s “codged” an 8 wheeler into a tractor!!! Pity it hasn’t an 8LXB in it or Fergie would be half-way across the Channel now-------swimming!!! Cheers Dennis.P.S. with the plonk and brie on his back that he has promised all year!!

Could this be one of the tractor units built by Hill’s offshoot Bridge Motors, being tested by the Ministry before going into service?

As it is a “White Coat” stood there with the vehicle, it would seem to be undergoing a technical test. My thoughts are it is performing a static handbrake efficiency test at maximum authorised weight.

Hi All
According to the Hill fleet list there was a Hill Big J 6x2 TOU 997 H & the book says it was a sawn down 8-wheeler also it was badged a Hill there are 3 photos of it in the book.
Cheers Rich

Pic taken from Marc (Bubbleman)'s excellent ‘Scrapbook’ thread.

Hi this lorry was owned in later life by my mate Bob Cartwright from Southampton he used it to pull SRF trailers (Sea Route Ferry) and then Macpac Containers my driver Terry Moody’s dad drove it.

Hi All
I’am just being corrected by Mr. Hill the Big J is really a Bridge Commercials Mk3 and now I have my glasses out you can read this on the grill it had a 6lxb. Also that is a Taskers 40 flat and its first driver Bob Barnard.

Also Tribsa did he rope down using hemp rope or poly? Regards Charlie

Hi All
We are sure it is a full capacity load of cargo under the sheets secured by twisted rope of a tying type and fastened to rope hooks.
Lucky it wasn’t a north east of Scotland Testing station :unamused:

Good answer Rich,

Phew, nearly fell off the page!

Hi Mikey
Your Xmas card is in the car :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:
You are right well past our bedtime but we prefer the kitchen table these days

Rich, save the card for next year now ( i mean later this year of course, just 357 days to christmas).

I’ve seen your kitchen table and you’d have to move that pile of truck mags first, also too much information thanks.

Regards to you and Kay and I hope you prosper in this new year, I honestly feel for all owner drivers and small hauliers with the onset of the vat rise and fuel duty but where would we be without you? Who wants mega fleets all looking the same and only looking for the big jobs! Anyway more serious stuff for me now…

I’m just off to watch the mighty saints stuff exeter (i hope). ttfn

Mike
