Any one remember Carryfast from Town Quay and in particular
Cyril (cant remember his surname) the driving instructor? I was sent
from Newcastle in 1970 to train for my class 1 along with another driver
for the then newly introduced HGV test. We stayed at the Rosida Hotel
on Hill Lane, and spent most nights eying the sights in the Juniper Berry,
I was only 23 then and it was certainly an eye opener! After the first day
Cyril let us do pretty much as we liked as he realised that we we were
competent enough and only needed to learn the procedure required by
the examiner. We worked for Miles Druce Metals another part of the
Carryfast group,at the end of our training week we went home to take
test on the following tuesday. At that time you could drive an HGV
until your old licence ran out and although we could claim a licence
on “grandfather rights” we had opted to take the test.As the
company needed us working we used two vehicles I went out with a loaded
artic did a few drops then went to the test station and changed over
with Malcolm, he then went on delivering the rest of the load I took the test.
We both passed but the daft thing is if we had failed we could have
carried on driving until our licences ran out. Kevmac47.

Fair enough Rich, i really feel for them. There are quite a few with long service and it must be a real worry for them, its just had to many owners recently and I’d guess the owners are more interested in the large site rather than the trucks.
We’ll leave it there.
Brilliant pictures of Bakers, 3.31am? just got in from clubbing…

HERES A COUPLE OF PHOTOS OF BRUCE FEW AND ONE OF HIS SON DON FEW (unfortunately not very clear).BRUCE I UNDERSTAND ORIGINALLY DROVE FOR GEORGE BAKER.I BELEAVE HE USED TO DRIVE STEAM WAGONS LIKE THE OLD SUPER SENTINEL PICTURED BELOW.DAD SAID BRUCE WAS VERY BROUD TO SHOW DRIVERS HIS STEAM LICENSE AND THE FACT THAT HE GOT DONE FOR BREAKING THE 10MPH SPEED LIMIT.DAD SEEMS TO THINK BRUCE WAS IN HIS LATE 60s OR 70s WHEN THESE PHOTOS WERE TAKEN IN 1963.THE REASON WHY HES DRIVING A ANNIS SCAMMEL IS BECAUSE WHEN BRUCE AND MY DAD WERE ON THERE WAY TO STAINES THE LORRY THEY WERE IN THE ENGINE BLOW UP.AFTER A PHONE CALL TO ERIC BAKER AND A COUPLE OF HOURS LATER ANNIS TRANSPORT ARRIVES WITH THIS SCAMMEL.BRUCE DROVE THIS LORRY FOR A MONTH BEFORE IT WAS HANDED BACK (not sure what the connection was between Bakers and Annis Transport)
THIS TIME BRUCE IS OVER SEEING THE SIDE WARD LOADING OF A D8 BULLDOZER
HERES THE PHOTO OF BRUCES SON DON FEW
THE SUPER SENTINEL LIKE THE ONE BRUCE MAY HAVE DRIVEN.
