Southampton Warehousing had the contract out of Martini in the docks. There was also a depot in an old manor house at Testwood. All gone now I guess.
Hi Fergie
Was that anything to do with Testwood Vintners??
Regards Pat

Hi all, sorry for my absence of late but I just don’t seem to have anything to comment on. Although I look in from time to time I seem lost for anything new to add.
Hello to Bill Sparrow and like you I too have delivered sugar from T&L. Silvertown to the I.O.W. barge on the old Town Quay. As for Mack hauliers in Southampton, I certainly can’t recall the company. What year are we talking about ■■ The only hauliers I can remember in that area in the very early years were, Downer Baker (Removals)Ltd., Bakers Heavy Haulage Ltd. and Brown and Star Ltd. There were many more up the other end in the Chapel area in and around Endle St. but no Macks that I recall.
Tony, good luck in your new job mate and thanks for your confidence re: Southampton Warehousing Ltd. I remember them well as at that time cica 1972, I was running J.B.M.(Haulage) Ltd. from Queens Terrace. Trouble is that at this time I am having a senior moment regarding the ownwers but no doubt it will come. Chris was very astute in noticing that it was a wine tanker and Fergie was near when mentioning Martini; the right building but diferent name. I bet Charlie will remember when I say, S.A.W.F.A. (South African Wine Farmers Association). Everthing was in a dark pink, including the first two Atkinsons that they ran. Some people of a certain age may remember one of them on it’s side in a ditch on the Eastliegh slip road off the old Chandlersford by-pass. This was a result of a drinking spree at The Towers cafe Basingstoke of residue wine left in the tank(by arrangement) by two well known Southampton drivers but thereby hangs a tale !!!

The one and the same Pat ! I had a mate who drove for them for a long time, when it finished, he went on to car transporters in the docks, doing the Renaults.
Hi Pat,Charlie and all.I knew I’d seen a photo of a MK5 Mandator loading wine in S’oton and here it is.Taken on 10 July 1965 loading wine from the “Southampton Castle”.The tank is not labelled “ATW” and I’m not sure about the 4-3000 label,3000 litres is 660 galls and x 4 = 2840 galls but the photo says the “huge” tank carries 4000 galls.I think it’s a one-potter.Looks like the chemist/customs on the tank, maybe taking a sample, unless you Hampshire drivers had white smocks .On the cabside it says (I think) South African Wine Growers (or Farmers) Association (London) Ltd and the secretary is A.Lockey I think. The Mandator has a London reg so I’m not sure who the owner was.
Being an AEC fan she does look a nice motor, one of the last before the ergo series came out.AV690 and six-speed box would blow a lot of other stuff off the road in them days.
And then I found Charlie’s AEC MK5 Mammoth Major on the Harp Lager job.3000 gall insulated tank, taken on 23 Dec 1961.She has a London reg as well.
Well,I don’t know how old you are mate.
Hi Chris. That AEC was an 80 barrel job(2880 galls).I said that to be pedantic. Whn I worked there the company had 4 AECs and 4 Leyland Octopusses. The London regs were because they were ex Guiness.Don,t I know a load of rubbish? Regards Charlie

info only, if the ‘manor house’ is the site on the right just up the A36 from the Testwood roundabout then it still exists as a store. I used to tip at ‘Cert’ who were based there in mid 90’s but I believe Macintyre Scott are about to consolidate into this site and pull out of the Docks and Romsey (allegedly).
Hi TIR Original, Macks Hauliers was an old firm, my father worked for them pre ww2 driving one of their chain driven Scammell tankers. But I joined them at 16 in 1948. We used to do a lot of sugar to the Old Town Quay and we always stayed at an old lady’s called May Cole opposite our depot, plus drinking in a pub just along the road called the Oddfellows. Most of the time we would reload from Camber Quay in Portsmouth for Covent Gerden. The firm was originally started as Macks Pantechnicans by a Mrs Mack , who was mother of the Mack family who still exist as M & W Mack of Covent Garden. Of Course the transport side was taken into the BRS in 1950, and me having to go into the army for my two years conscription. Regards Bill S.

There is just room for a Camel now Richard.Hercules still do low pass overs though, over Jurby,so let me know and I’ll send a flare up.Come for me at night,we don’t want ■■■■■■■■■ to get a fix on us 'cos they are fed up with us pillaging Workington and Whitehaven at night and retaliation is what they are after
Aye,Norman’s cruise is a non-runner,anyway will be cheaper for me to come to Hants,I would have to buy Harry’s whisky and Norm’s beer, they think I’m a rich tax exile but I’m only a poor pensioner like them
