Long Departed Southampton Hauliers (Part 1)

August Bank holiday is good for most people especially as there is the extra day off, either saturday or sunday. Saturday could be busy with locals, sunday afternoon quieter as they all b**ger off for their dinner and the pub goes quiet. Tim can then join in the chat. Also Tim would be more prepared for us this time and should the weather be a tad better, he would put on a barbie. That would encourage the “just having one” brigade to be able to arrange a suitable “pass out” from the “Are you going to be long?” Police. Get word around now and people can try and keep this space free rather than zooming off to Shetland for the weekend or summat similar.

Sunday gets my vote.

Hi Pat, i had a start with Botley Cleansing about 10 years ago on the sewage tankers.
Turned up on the Monday morning and went out as 2nd man with another driver to learn the ropes on tank valves etc.
Sod that for a laugh, i was heaving all bloody day.No way was i gonna be able to get used to the smell of raw sewage.
Got back to the yard in the afternoon and did,nt even bother going into the office to tell ,em i would,nt be back.
I got out of the lorry straight into my car and went home for a well needed shower.

Just about right there Jim. There was me, Peter Pan (Yellow Transit), Snow Man (F89 with a 9 speed fuller box), Hi Fly (Took my job on at VOLVO when I left), Dave from EST and Squeaky Chris from a radio shop in Bedford Place. I bought my Midland 40 from “Harry the Hat” from Robert Armstrongs. It was getting too hot for him to keep bringing in and out of the country, cost me £40. 1977.

Hi Pat thanks for posting them on, they are all the same F88( NBH 518M) i bought it from Charlie Hiscock out at Nomansland was a bit of a wreck untill i painted it, but it was reliable, the trailer loaded with ATO was for Kingswood Transport in Canute Road Rick Carlton (R.I.P.) and Les Flack, i also had it on for Sea Route Ferry thats when i meet Gordie Asher he had a scannie110 i think it was, i think his dad was on there aswell. when i finished with M Millard ( do you remember him Pat) I sold it to Barry Jealous (PENTALVER TRANS) and Trevor McNess used to drive it, Barry gave me a job working nights loading skellys with containers ready for the drivers the next day but i olny stayed for about 2 or 3 weeks cos a guy called Pat Duffy offerd me a job    happy days

Hi Gazzer what ever happend to Timmy Vaughn and the banana car   Do you remember him ■■?

Hi Jim

Yes Geordie Asher he was a hard driver he bought one of Sea Routes 111’s GCG130S I bought it off him and sold it to Mark Compton, he had no end of trouble with it and got fed up mending it so we had another deal and I ended up with it again, funny thing is we had no problems with it from then on John Shaw drove it for over a year.

Here it is in Comptons colours with his trade make two number plates!!

Geordie’s dad was Norman a real gent really looked after his ‘K’ reg 110 sleeper I think he had an accident and Bob Cartwright bought it and fitted a day cab to it. Norman did buy a brand new Scania 140 4X2 tractor unit PHO100P but things got tight or work dropped off and Brants Demolition of Tadley bought it and guess what I ended up with it years later, Gary Bampton was working for me at the time and we converted it into a 6X2 as 38 tons had just come in, here it is during the conversion.

And here is a pic John Shaw gave me of the finished article on the way out of Poole Docks with John himself at the wheel.

Regards Pat

Hi Pat Blimey mate youve owned naerly every Scannie on the south coast aint ya !!! i remember PHO 100P isnt it the one Stevie Beck converted with you ■■ Whats Gordie up to now ? have you kept in touch ? R Jimski.
