Long Departed Southampton Hauliers (Part 1)

I wonder how many of you worked for this man years ago??

Regards Pat

Badger: Once again people turn up unannounced, expecting me to be propping up the bar from the other side! Luckilly I wasn’t too far away when they phoned me, just had to finish a job off.

Ainacs: Many in Southampton have crossed paths, if not swords with Eric at some time in the past. You didn’t have to like him but respect his knowledge of the job.

Hello, found this amongst the cuttings…not a departed haulier but perhaps a few of you remember this bit of kit.

Cheers Bubbs.

Yes tribsa you are correct. As for some history on PBC European, then go to my post on page 3. Also a chap called Colin Phillpot was transport manager of PBC back in those days. Does ayone know what became of him when he parted company with Frank Allen ■■

Hi Nobby if it’s the same Colin Phillpot who has come in my yard he moved to France a few years ago and offered a sort of mobile repair service around the Cherbourg area, I seem to recall that he had moved back. I will check with Terry in the yard as he has had dealings with him and get an update.

Did Bulldog turn into Black? Lion or somebody like that? They had yellow motors, I’m sure one of their drivers told me that, mind you it was in a resturaunt in France or Italy so I would’ve been ■■■■■■ at the time

Black Lion was formed when Red Funnel took over Peter Gray’s operation (Grays/Andover Transport) They replaced Peter’s transport manager Gary, who decided to poach some of their best drivers and set up Black Lion.
They used the yard of the Merc dealer in Andover (pentagon) as an operating centre for a couple of trailers, this used to be Bulldog’s yard, hence the confusion.
As far as i know, Black Lion are still going strong although i don’t think they stray over the water much these days.

It was either Dave, Alan or ‘■■■■■’ you were ■■■■■■ up with in Italy.
Great lads, as were all the Black Lion lot!

Hi all

Another pic courtesy of Bubbleman(Marc) Jamesons again on the same link span as the Bakers ERF I think, a TIR disc/plate but no long vehicle signs needed then!!!

Regards Pat

Good old picture of a ‘Jamies’ export load (via Marc) Pat. No TIR plate or Long Vehicle sign showing.
No TIR plate as it was one of the old flatbed U.K. trailers and because it was ‘open TIR’.
No Long Vehicle sign because these consignments went out '68 or '69 (can’t remember which) and that was before L.V. plates were introduced. That wasn’t until I believe 1971. and even then any vehicle that was so constructed to carry another vehicle were exempt from displaying them e.g. car transporters etc.
By the way T 9. in the picture I dont think was theirs and may have been one of Merricks but not 100%. Never mind keep on binging back memories of the good times in transport, as it used to be !!

Found this pic of Lambert Bros of Eastleigh

Pat, : Is that the same set up that’s running now or are they part of a big group running in name only?
