Long Departed Southampton Hauliers (Part 1)

Hi All
SFM took the rubber on after Summerfields
Cant remember who they were ■■■■■■■ with.

Mappo no its not JS

Apologies for my mistake ref mappo’s time on the Titanic I was just trying to make him seem younger than he really is

I think SFM had a connection with LTS Freight as Eric Rivers was involved with it.I also have a feeling Charlie Jameson was connected in some way.
Most of their work was Esso related, and as Tony says a bit tight getting in and out, he had to take the horses off to get the trailer round.

Drove past Dell Wharf yesterday and you,re right Dave, it,s now all housing and do you remember the cafe
at top of the road, well that,s long gone. :frowning: :frowning: :frowning:

Is that some kind of VOLVO ride and drive day?

Is that Tony Brady wiv 'is 'ands in his pockets?

Hi Gazza
Yes it was a ride & drive when Mr Snellgars 6x4 & Mr Reads F16 were new.

ok so not quite southampton , but not that far away and it starts with an s , a few pics from ctp salisbury roadrun 5/4/09

cheers

PDW

Thanks for those pictures, brings back a lot of memories, drove a lot of them over the years.

The ERF belonging to F. READ is unusual, did’nt get anymore pictures of that particular lorry did you ? I think it’s a rare “continental” model

pdw

I love the pole trailer, would look good behind one of your Scania’s
Good pics I owned and operated the black F89, brought it from ARD in Portsmouth one of the last to be built, sold it to Ian Rycroft who sent it to Bosnia after having a new cab put on it, chap in Ringwood now owns it and pulls a vintage boat around.

Cheers MaggieD

Fergie47. I’m with you on that one,I have in the past, also driven quite a lot of the vehicles in the photos (which are a credit to the camera man) The old ERF with the four cylinder Gardner was just about the slowest. It’s a good job the folk who restore these old’uns are still about-they’re a joy to look at (now) In summary,a great bunch of photos. Regards to all, 900X20.

My eagle eyes rekon the VOLVO OBJ435M has the wrong grille fitted to it. Its neither a “290” nor an “F89” so it must be a “240”.

Hi Gary

That is indeed very sad news, the taste of her beer and ‘jambon’ sandwiches were like manna from heaven on a Saturday evening after the long drive from Italy.

RIP Chantal

Regards Pat
