Long Departed Southampton Hauliers (Part 1)

Hi another pic from Bubblemans excellent Scrapbook thread with a Southampton link Pitters.

Regards Pat

Hya Pat, that,s a good old pic mate, anyone know just how long Pitters have
been around ? My earliest recollection of them was in the late 60,s when they used
to deliver the cape fruit ( in wooden crates then )into a warehouse at Titchfield i worked
in as a nipper. I went on to drive for them briefly in the early 70,s before beginning my stint
on European work.

Hi Tony

Just a little bit longer than you mate 110 years

See this link it has been mentioned on here before by TIR Original

hello Gavin Mc Ardle
I`m only just back on line after moving house and have just seen your thread & pictures .
The photos are well after we left in 73 and BRS drivers wore greasy boiler suits not smart 2 piece ha , some faces seem familiar so post some more please.
Just one thing ask your neighbour if he remembers the Pirrelli men , jock Stevens , Tom Armstrong , Percy Evans , Ron Turner , Pike Bros , Bill Moran .

The bonus question in the Victory Pic: Which ship is in the background?

Think it might be the Le France, ■■ which was there for ages, by 101 - 102 berth . She was bought by a Swedish company ( ? ) and shortened, by about a third, and used for cruise work ?

I worked for Victory transport, great company !!

Here you are Fergie another Victory Transport!!

Regards Pat

Cheers Pat. I’m not that bleedin old, not as old as mappo anyway !!1

First truck at Victory was a Lynx ( 28 ton ? ) then a Mandator at 32T, I hadn’t been there that long when it was taken over by Ameys, then after Greenwoods. All the trucks / trailers / sheets etc were all kept in excellent condition. Ron Hatch and Len Seldon were in the Transport office, two of the gentlemen of the industry !

Slatey. I think you may be right mate. Now I think about it, Le France had one of the funnels with a set of “wings” attached. Age addles the brain !!

Hi all another of Eric Bakers ERF’s

Regards Pat

Gazzer
Reference Pat’s pic and the ship’s name, I wasn’t sure so I thought I’d ask the audience :-

Mappo said “The Titanic” he has a soft spot for Kate Winslett and he was a cabin boy on it
GazIOW thought it was the "S.S. Valerie something about the funnels, he said blowing in the wind !
Charlieone thinks it’s the Gosport Ferry
Traniht is sure it’s the “Doric” because he can see the portakabin and he didn’t have to pay for his meals !
I couldn’t see the ship, I was driving the Ford Consul under the trailer.

Hi All
Uncle Pat said keep this thread going so here are a couple of pics to test the old grey matter

1Is Princes launching the updated F series at the NEW Test Lane site 50 bonus points if you can name the driver stood along side ?

2 a Tony Lane Scania piloted by M.K.Leech Heavy Haulage an you name the town for 25 bonus.

Your starter for 10 is in which county were they taken?

BFN

Sorry MaggieD, I know you’re normally correct, but, must contradict you there. Mappo couldn’t have been a cabin boy as he was retired from White Star Line by then ! Believe he signed up a few years later as Kitchener’s batman, then after the war finished, went lorry driving. Think he still is ! :imp: :imp:

That driver,s not J.S. is it ■■?

What sort of bloody float is that with a flippin washing line on it ■■?
Looks to me like Micky,s eyeing up that bird in the mini through his mirror.
I,m guessing it,s in Hants somewhere or maybe Dorset.

Mappo.

I’d forgotton about them. I remember loading rubber out of there, as well as Hythe, Membry, and Caln, expect it’s a housing estate now ■■
I Think that Mick Burchett, who I worked with on both Victory and Smiths, worked there, all new tackle if I remember. But didn’t it have a connection with another Southampton firm ? Like Pitter or Lambert ? Guess someone will know ?

Look forward to seeing you soon mate .
