Long Departed Southampton Hauliers (Part 1)

Even when the company folded Barry still ran one truck a Merc on traction for STS, the driver was Phil Dibden.

Fergie As I now live close to there where exactly in Cadnam/Bartley was Jim’s place please?

Your asking me to go back 35 years or more, but if memory serves me, go past the cafe with the big lay-by on the right ( is it still there ? ) to the next X roads ( heading towards Cadnam ) a At X roads turn left ( New Inn Rd or Way ? ) then not far up that road left again into a close that finished into a dead end.The Bungalow was on a corner plot.
You’d never get away with running a Continental transport company in a residential road like that these days. !!
He also had a “shed” where he kept various spares and bits and bobs at Winsor, on the right, opposite a small lane ( Hill St ?),on the road running into Testwood . It was on the edge of the road, I guess it’s an estate now of houses.

Thanks for that will have a look up there sometime, and no the cafe is sadly gone John and Shelia sold it about 4 years ago to New Forest Ice Cream who made it into an Ice Cream Parlour but that was short lived it’s now a care home I think, Shelia is still alive and still cycling around but poor John is dead.

There is an Eastern European running a burger bar in the layby from about 8.00am till 3.00pm.

This is the Cadnam end of the layby (Taken from across the road from my house) taken on 10/1/09 it was -8 that night

Thanks again Regards Pat

Did Jim have a house that backed on to his yard at Chandlers Ford? I called in to see him once one tea time in the winter. Think it would have been mid to late '70’s. I remember he was working in a very dark garage wrapped up in a coat and scarf. I was a bit taken aback as I thought it was all a bit primative. He asked If I would like a cuppa and I recall going through a gate into a garden and up to a house. I remember him telling me he wasn’t too bothered about running the wagons but Barry was keen to have a go. I think he was refering to the continetal stuff. When we got into the house/office Barry was on the phone ripping into one of their drivers, which again suprised me as the last time I had seen him he was hardly out of school, and even at this time I wondered how a probably older driver would respond to this!

Thanks for the picture Pat, haven’t seen that lay-by in years, we use to use it as a trailer park !!!
Sorry to hear John has died, nice bloke, I used that cafe virtually every day when I was on Smith of Maddiston at Nutsey Lane, great breakfast. I remember that the band “The Stranglers” use to use it before they became really famous, he had loads of their posters around the cafe. Nice memories!

Big Unit.
Never ever went to the C/F yard, so can’t help you on that one. You,re right about Barry,s attitude, he was certainly put against the wall a couple of times. When I knew him he was barely out of nappies, hence the name Gladys, we never took any notice of him then, he was just a boy. Maybe things would have been different had Jim continued to run it, who knows.
