Hi
I’ve put a load more on of Squibb’s somewhere on this thread, you’ll have to go back a bit to find them all !! The ERF is on the A74 near Beattock, and the Guy in Paris and Le Harve.
Your right about the avocado pears, the delivery photo is at the Rungis Paris market ! remember !
I was there with Tony Kimber, Les Barnes, and Kenny Batten, there was just the 4 then. I think you came after that, I was driving either the Scania Vabis or the F86, or the 88 (when Kenny was off sick) for quite a few months.
I PM’d you ( private message ) a few weeks back, did you get it ? I’ve got to go out now, so I’ll PM you sometime tomorrow and we can catch up !

8) Can anyone on this site remember a chap from millbrook by the name of gorge broomfield■■? last i saw of him was back in the late 70/80s.bev
Hi Bev.I remember Georgie Broomfield very well. I worked with him for a while when I was on for Horace Ransome pulling for STS.I hope he’s not a good mate of yours because I gave him a good right hander(several in fact) one night in the Esso Stop in Marseilles. Found out he had been ringing Ron Griffiths and dobbing us all in.You can’t be having that can you? Didn’t have a lot more to do with him after that strangely enough
Hi Bev
Small world mate , we did a lot of wine tankers for Armstrongs during the years but the only time I really got to get to know some of the drivers was on the first morning of the drivers strike in winter 1978 in Southampton , my old Singer froze up and I was late for picket duty so I was given the task to picket Smithers and Armtrongs gate with four of Armstrongs drivers , Racing snake and Harry the Hat was two on em , all we managed to stop was a milk float .
Dire times they were and what did we gain .
I remember Drinkwaters at Nursling as well , most of the tippers were owner drivers , I did a litle work for them as well after I retired .
Regards Frenchy
hi there fergie, i think i might have took the f86 over from you mate, the f86 i took over was blue and white eps onthe front if i remember right, but up in the head board was GRANDE LAGER,WHICH I THOUGHT MEANT LARGE LOAD, AND THAT IS THE ONE THAT I USED TO DO THE CONVOY WORK FOR SQUIBBY,WITH AND LES BARNES HAD ONE THE SAME,but i had the erf first on there, regards bev.

Bubbleman has just posted this old pic of a LHD Volvo anyone know whose it was as it has a local Southampton registration??
Regards Pat
Hey Pat,the 88 with POW757M reg was with an article about stolen lorries and this 88 had false plates, well spotted with the Southampton reg though
Cheers mate,Marc
I’ll pick holes here:
Soton reg, yes, F88…no.
I think its an F89. The air intake at the back of the cab is a flat one, F88’s (specifically 290’s) were tubes.
The grill is the flat full width F89 type as opposed to the extended 290 type. The way to tell is if the lower flap is upright (F89) or hinged forward (290). To me this one looks upright.
Dont be fooled by the oblong plaque under the Volvo badge on the grille. That was only produced for F88-290’s
Lastly: There were NO F88 290’s produced!

Think you meant there were no F89 - 290’s there, the one thing you have missed is that all F89’s were LHD and I think the 290 F88 was only produced for the UK by Ailsa Trucks(could be wrong there !!) so there were none built as LHD.

Ant
I think you will have upset Gazzer. He doesn’t like to be wrong.I like extracting the urine as too many are full of their own importance( Not you Gary mate) I was going to reply to his posting saying that I drove an F88 290 but you beat me to it Regards Charlie
Im sorry for that, I missed out: LHD. i.e. " There were no LHD F88-290’s produced".
Thank you for correcting me on that issue!

I Concur. As soon as I saw the photo I realised it’s an F89, and that bumper and two stickers I recognise as well. I could tell you who ran it, when, and where it was parked up ( for a long time) However, in the circumstances it’s best left unsaid… legal reasons !..
Wow that old black and white pic created a bit of a stir
Please note all I said was a LHD Volvo
Come on Fergie spill the beans! After all it must be well over 30 years ago now what possible legal reasons could there be??
One person I know that ran his own Volvo all those years ago was a rogue by the name of Bill Repert?? but I think his was RHD but I could be wrong! I met him when he was fitter for Molo’s at Upton Lane Nursling.
Regards Pat
pdw:
also can anyone tell me a bit more about jim squibb , where abouts in cadnam did he run out of and up to what year ?, ( i’m just a spring chicken ! ),and was this anything to do with barry squibb , who used to race ford escorts in the early eighties , you could watch him on world of sport on a saturday afternoon , his motor may of looked something like my old dog.
cheers for now , pdw .PDQ… in answer to your question
Jim Sqibbs " YARD" was actually at his bungalow in a private estate at Bartley. For that reason if ever we in the UK we always took the motors home. He had a concrete slab and a large wooden shed in the garden, all the repairs and maintenance was done there, to trucks and trailers, out in the open, rain or shine. The “office” was the bungalow ! There were only 4 of us working there then, with 2 Guys, 1 ERF and an F88 on AVON tyre contract to Swiss.
It got more awkward to work out of there as it got bigger, with a Scania Vabis, an F86 and another F88. I left after a couple of years, and then it moved to big premises, and a name change at Chandlersford. Then it really expanded, got very big, very quickly, and the inevitable happened.
Barry Squibb ( Gladys ) as he was known to us " early" lads, was just a nipper then and helped Jim do all the maintenance. Jim’s wife Joan was always ready with the tea pot, bacon sandwiches, breakfast , lunch, or dinner. It was a family run business in the direct sense.
Barry, as you say raced cars. I believe when the company folded at C/Ford they bought a hotel in Torquay, or somewhere in Devon.

Nah, best say nothing Pat. Definitely wasn’t Bill Repert though.
Although I haven’t seen the guy for years, I still would’nt drop him in it. He in fact ,was an innocent party, till the ■■■■ hit the fan.
I CAN tell you it was on M.E. for a bit though.
