cheers pat/mappo for the pic of henry smithers, noticed that the big j had the exhaust under the front bumper,i was always led to belive that only trucks with the exhaust under the front were on tanker work, cant remember them doing tankers, may be thy were second hand trucks, but nice pic of them both sat there. what engine did they have in them was it a 180 gardner, or some other engine like a β β β β β β β on a fuller boxβ β ? be interested to know mates.BEV.

 hi pat, do you remember a company called henry smithersβ β ?
Here you are Bev,
one of me and Frenchy.
Hi Bev, i drove a few Big J,s back in the 70,s for different firms but if my
memory serves me right these had the 220 β β β β β β β engine with the
Fuller gearbox. I,m sure Frenchy will put me right.
As you look at photo Frenchy,s on the left and me on the right with the
transistor radio in the windscreen. BLOODY HELL how did we manage
without fitted radios aye,
Thats Steve Cherrit remeber him well.Had a good story to tell about middle east with I think it was Jones of Aldridge.
Someone get him to tell and then let us know the details.
Thanks for that Pat but that was Wallyβs motor. Mine was LCG903T.

Great picture of Steve Cherrett with son. He was round my place on
Sat eve. He had a good look on here and I am trying to get him to
join the new century and get a laptop!!!
Steve does have a good story to tell of his first trip ever abroad, having
left Cutlers and shipping out for Jones of Sandbach in the big eyed
Foden with the roller engine, destination Baghdad!! He was as green
as grass and the story is hilarious though lengthy. Maybe one day
soon he will get on here and tell it.
Ref the Routiers Ian, youβre right about the Oasis, so you got me on
that one!
well pat, maybe this name will jog your memory, do you remember a young lad named john rogerson from salisbury, he used to drive for john nichols(RIP) running portugale for him, about the same time as larry(GYPSIE TRUCKER) worked for you,and do you remember a father and son outfit from lords hills called NIRONor simular, had a 111 scania white on irish plates, and a F89 also white but on english plates,i believe the father was a airline pilot for BEA in them days, always looking for permits for ITALY,were mainly pulling for SEAROUTE FERRIES in thoses days,Right back to jamesons i reconise the driver of 315 but for the life of me cant think of his name,i did a bit of work for them used to tip rags from prato up in edinbourgh, then reload girvin in ayrshire,if i havent lost the plot totaly i think the transport manager was a scotsman by the name of dave, not sure, i remember the scania vabis to, and squibby had one to,and he also had a bloody old BERGLIEA,DONT KNOW WERE HE BOUGHT IT FROM THOUGH,who knowes,SORRY ABOUT THE SPELLING MATE.ask pat scorey if he remembers me from the photo when he calles round thursday, i expect nobby will remember, used to keep myself to myself in thoses days pat,and just get on with the work available.
THANKS FOR YOUR REPLY MAPPO, yer, i to used to have the old transit radio up on the winscreen stapped down with a couple of bungies, those were the days mate, re the fuller box did you have the one with the clutch stop on the geer stick, i remember when i did a bit for my old mate kenny lane his big j had one fitted to the geer stick, remember playing god save our gracious queen on the bloody thing as i left for italy, and old laner laughed his head of, but once i got used to her what a tool, i know we only ran at 32 ton in those days(well)but did that motor ever pull, the driver of it before me was β β β β charlton from salisbury, and his nephew, young freddy bliar had it for a sort while running italy aswell.i also took a big j with a 180 gardner in it to italy, down to sera vale srivier near genover but she didnt like the blanc, boiled up on me the β β β β β ,which was realy strange because she didnt do it on the cedon, there you go may be it was the longer haul up the blanc, cheers mate.

Hi Bev I think you will find that all Big Jβs had front mounted exhausts as standard, I owned 4 in the very early 70βs (2x 6 wheel tippers with AEC 505βs & 2 x tr/units with 180 Grandads all had front mounted exhausts.
I recognize that ugly mush from somewhere - now trying to agitate the grey matter to work out wherefrom
Gavin
Hi there gavin, thank for your reply mate, you mention you had some tippers mate, well i have done quite a bit of tipper/bulk work over the years, out of the mendips mainly, out of most quarries down that way,do you remember a company in soton called drinkwaters???you know gavin every time i look at that KW i think of the time i pulled up at KEHLE boarder down at strasbourg, and low and behold sat in the tir park was about 30 of iran containers trucks what a site mate they looked loverly sat there, same colur sceem as you truck virtually, but they were all yanky macks.cheers mate.bev

8) Can anyone on this site remember a chap from millbrook by the name of gorge broomfieldβ β ? last i saw of him was back in the late 70/80s. bev
Yes Bev, I certainly can and so would most of the older hands remember George Broomfield. I have mentiond him before on this site, I think.
He drove for Wards Transport in the early days when I first met him and then he went on to work for other companies in Southampton including Ken Lane,
for whom he did the continent with a Big βJβ. Wards did a lot of wool from 104/5
berth and George could make it look like a βtiltβ after he had roped and sheeted it. I have heard people comment on his βlipβ in the past but a better man at his job you would be hard pressed to find !! For those who are not quite sure he
was a short slight man with black curly hair and always on the go (so to speak).
I am sure a few years ago that I read his obituary in the local evening Echo
and nobody has mentioned ever seeing him. I believe he suffered a long term
illness before his passing. God rest the soul of a very nice man.
hi there TIR, thank for reverting with the sad news of a very good friend of mine who i lost contact with back in the eighties, its a freighting world we live in, i had no idea that he had been ill and passed on i feel realy sad about that,i had some realy good times with george, running mainly down to SICILI. and i loaded with him out of 104 many times and your right mate you could put a spirt level on his load his roping and sheeting was the best, i also remember him like you say on laners running italy, think he had some of his own trucks back in the real early day, correct me if im wrong,we worked on squibbies for a long time when jim had it and not barry, blimy mate there are a lot of old friends that have gone, (we no not the day or hour). there is one thing for sure about george if you got on the wrong side of him, you new all about it,must admit he could get a bit loud sometimes, but that was george, once again nobby thanks for the info mate take care.BEV
