Long Departed Southampton Hauliers (Part 1)

anyone remember CLARKE BROTHERS, from diamond road , bitterne park.

Hi Richard welcome to the site

I’m not sure if this is the same Hunt’s who had a yard at Millbrook Industrial Estate and ran green KM’s and TK’s, as Marc says looks like they were taken over by Laingfreight but I though that Hunts with the green livery were bought out by Meachers as they had the Pirelli work!

Regards Pat

old trucker:
Morgans at shaftesbury , not sure if they are still going?? was , if i am correct , something to do with Craig Vincent , He owned SMV of Yoevil , by coincidence , SMV are MAN dealers !!. Morgans are dark green and run MAN"s !!! The plot thickens !!

Richard
I thought Craig (who I know ) ran the Truck and van rental.

The Hunts lorries are all Hampshire registered & if my mind is correct they were light green very much like LTS

Hi all and a very happy (and healthy) New Year to everybody

Charlie Morgan from Waltham Chase was a very big supporter of his local Chapel and should he ever hear you swear or curse in his yard then you would be on your way, no matter what your intention of spending !!
I think most of you have it right about his business. Never a general haulier
but into trailer hire and sometimes units as well. Main business was his
breakers yard and exports. In the early days he was also an agent for Foden.
I have to beg to differ on the Man dealership though. I’m not hair splitting but
cast your minds back and think “ROMAN” (The Romanian Version of M.A.N.)
Sorry-pardon but just thought I would jog your memories

Hi TIR
My reason for saying thet were MAN dealers is at the time they supplied Shipphams Paste @ Chichester & Goughs @ Winchester plus many more & i belive but am a bit too young to be sure but Shipphams stayed with them as they operated Fodens before plus i thought ROMANS didnt come to the U.K. till much later.■■?
Cheers Tribsa

Hi wasn’t Eric Baker a MAN agent for a while before C Morgan and Sons at Waltham Chase after he fell out with ERF??

Regards Pat

Hi everybody, hope you all have a better new year than i,ve
had christmas. In bed with man flu and bad chest.
At least i,ve not had a ciggie for 4 days and never will again.

Re - Rosehill Garage in Waltham Chase.

While i worked for Peter Green in the 70,s a Northampton man who
moved to Park Gate he bought a new MAN V10 ( T reg still with the
column change, but a Fuller and not the ZF ) from Ron Morgan.
He also had a six wheel rigid ROMAN that he drove himself.

TIR ,they were definitely a MAN dealer., ( and perhaps ROMAN was sold under the same franchise) I had a demonstrator MAN off of Ron for a week and almost bought one, at the time they were very good trucks, even with the column shift.

Another one of Bubblemans gems with a Southampton interest from his Scrapbook thread.

And a couple more Totton Tar AEC’s

This one is parked at the old small lorry park (Now gone) opposite Eling Rec Totton

Hi Fergie. I was so sure about this Roman thing that I rang and spoke to my brother today and he was a very good friend of Charlie’s. In fact in the early 70’s he went with him to Munich (by invitation) to the M.A.N. Factory.
He tells me that after this visit Charlie took the ROMAN agency as they were a cheaper version and thought they would be a good seller. However this proved not to be the case and were unsuccessful. He then as you say became the actual MAN agent. By this time I was not in haulage and had moved into the motor trade for a while and therefore was not interested who was doing what.
It’s just that I remembered all these ROMAN lorries on the front of Rosehill Garage. Therefore my apologies for any misunderstanding :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:

This MAN was later bought by Tony Lovell at Keelhaul, Hamble, and used on the Continent hauling boats UK / Europe. I drove it for a while, very reliable, and as the boats weren’t heavy, the power was good.

And here is an offending article!

I bet there arent too many of these photographed!

Hi Tony (Mappo)

I suppose that could be you in the pic at the drivers door of the Transport Services Iveco but a shame the pic is cut off at the bottom or we might have been able to see your socks and sandals as proof
But that is definitely one of mine in the pic probably Tutty or John Shaw.

Regards Pat

Thanks for that Pat.
