STRIPING OUT TILTS■■?
done a bit of agency work for sea route on local delivery and collection work , and it was always " tilt is the only trailer we got mate" , what a pain that was , as bad as , bolyn , air & cargo , harris , denny price and maxi .
worked in southampton docks in the early 90’s , on vehicle import and export ,could put my hand to anything , alarm fitting , vehicle fitting/stripping , loading/unloading the car train or the car ships , what fun driving a transit chassis cab up a wet ramp at high tide ! .
also done some temp work for h s l , on their 5 car volvo f l .
one of the great blokes i worked with was a guy called steve waite , we nicknamed him penfold , steve said he had worked for ron in the offices of sts for a good few years , anyone remember steve ? , or know what he is up to now ?.
and i used to be neighbours with john budd , who drove for jimmy alford for a good while, sadly john passed away a number of years back .
cheers for now pdw
Apologies for being misleading on my supposition of the linkspan useage in the picture showing Eric Bakers ERF boarding a ferry in Southampton.
This is most definitely the linkspan which was used by Townsend Ferries.
Although the same model and make, the linkspan at 3 station which was the one used for docking the M.V. Patricia and M.V. Eagle, It faces in the opposite direction !! Also Baker’s did not use either of those two ferries. As there were at that time no other ferries in operation(except for Normandy who’s linkspan faced in the same direction as Patricias’) then this would verify this fact.
You can also see in the background, the river Itchen and as pointed out by Ainacs, Vosper Thorneycrofts Shipyard at Woolston. Sorry for once again for getting my ageing brain confused and hope this sorts out any further guesswork.
If hadnt known you better “TIR Original” ,I would say you had been on the “red juice” again !!!

Hi Sling,
The driver in the John Ward pic, looks like Richard Mills aka “Chad” great character last time I heard he was on for Vitacress.
John Ward & Jack Fessett had a company called Mammoth Transport in Southampton, which was taken over by Hoveringham Gravel from Nottingham area in the late 70’s early 80’s due to the fact they had found the remains of a Mammoth in one of their quarries and wished to obtain the company to use the name Mammoth.
John stayed on and ran it,when he left he ran a few in his own name,as per your pic,and was involved with John Buckley in Bulldog Transport operating from Andover,he is now at PMP the container haulier.
