Thanks for the photo of the sleeper cab V8 Mandator signwritten R.A.Lane.
This particular lorry was mentioned by me on more than one occasion on this site by reg. No. YTR 272J. Go back to the thread page 2 and you will see one of my posts in Feb.
The lorry was purchased new in 1970 from Princes Commercials in Millbrook Road by Ken Lane (Later to become Spring Road Haulage).
I first met Ken in the late 60’s when he was trading from a small office in Totton High St. under the name of R.A. Lane Haulage Ltd. Yes John Lee you are correcct, Kens’ wifes name was Rose. In fact it was Rose Ann and the company was set up in her name. At the time Ken was running a few tippers out of the Mendip quarries and only dabbled a little in general haulage with a couple of small4 wheelers. However he decided to have a go at international after applying for and getting International Road Permits. (Thats why I stayed friends with him. ha ha). He ran this unit for 2 years and was plagued with breakdowns. He even took it to Princes’ forecourt and threatened to set fire to it. The unit was driven by Freddie Blair for most of that time. One night in a drunken stupor in some Southampton pub, I purchased the unit from Ken in a deal done on the back of a ■■■ packet. This was some time in 1972 and I ran it for 2 years trouble free except for a fan belt ! It was sold in about 1974 to a chap from Fareham who ran as Ranmar Transport. He reckoned later that it was the best motor he had ever bought.

Thanks for sharing that, very informative as all of your posts are. I particularly like the way you used to do your business deals :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses:
Was that the same Freddie Blair that drove for Colin Wilkes when he was
running Hocfun ?

Hi Tony, yes it certainly is the same Freddie Blair. I used to call him Bic because he looked like a biro. If he stood sideways and stuck his tongue out you could mistake him for a zip !! But what a great bloke.
And yes most of my deals were done as descrbed when it was with my old mate Ken. Back then we used to have shares in Bacardi (or you would have thought). By the way give my regards to your brother Keith.
