Long Departed Southampton Hauliers (Part 1)

Hello ainacs, thanks for your reply. The Southampton Tar Distilleries who contracted to Shell Wandsworth were Seddon Atkinsons with a red cab and silver bodies. The tar sprayers were taken off as they were not required for delivering black oil. They were all Southampton drivers and good people to get along with.To my eternal shame,I can’t remember their names but if any of them are looking in,they’ll remember the time. This is a good forum to be in,there’s loads of memories in it and it’s good to read. Regards to you all, 900X20.

Found a few more Southampton lorries, not sure if they’re all still going though.
Norman Offer near Swindon

Norman Offers used to have a yard just outside the dockgates but are long gone now! Norman himself was alovely old mad a real gent. His son Martin took the reins and not sure why but it failed, I believe he now runs a rest home

B.K.G Anyone know these?

BKG Brian Kenneth Gover now there is a true legend in the Southampton transport industry, I’m sure others will correct me but I believe that Roy worked with Charlie Jamesons years back and then went on to E F Phillips and Sons Transport Poole.

He had an incredible appetite for work, he could find work where others could not. He then set up BKG Transport they are based at Whiteparish and are still going strong Roy’s sons Tony and Terry now run it although Roy still keeps his hand in.

Is this an M.W.Baker Sed-Atk?

Looks very Much like one of Mo Bakers he of Transcon fame, Mo is no longer in transport as such although he does have a small slide back recovery truck and is now buying and selling light commercials.

R.J.Hood from Romsey.

Richard Hood runs a small fleet rigids and artic tippers and a flat I believe, and is based just off the A36 at Landford.
Will look for some more over the next few days.
Cheers Marc

Great pics again Marc Thanks

Regards Pat

BKG Brian Kenneth Gover or Roy Gover as he is better known, now there is a true legend in the Southampton transport industry, I’m sure others will correct me but I believe that Roy worked with Charlie Jamesons years back and then went on to E F Phillips and Sons Transport Poole.

 I worked for Shell and in the eighties, during the winter contractors were employed to help out.It was in the mid-eighties when The Southampton Tar boys were running out of the Wandsworth Depot, doing the black oil deliveries and I wondered if any of them are looking in.If so,do they remember the odd pint in “The Wheatsheaf” in Putney Bridge Road? They were good days and we had more than a few laughs.Write in if you were there as it would be good to hear from you. The depot closed just after 1987 and the drivers disbanded to other depots.Shame  ,it was a good job,no one ever left! Regards to you all,900X20.

Hi 900X20

Didn’t Clapcotts do any of that ? They had a yard along Millbank near to where the Saints new ground is and a workshop and yard at Nutsey Lane Totton (Now Man Dealership) horrible bluey/turquoise coloured cabs! Both Trevor and Seymour Clapcott were time served AEC apprentices at Southall and used to ride pushbikes up to Southall early Monday mornings and back again on a Friday!!!

Regards Pat

I remember Clapcotts well. And the story of the 2 son’s push biking to AEC Southhall is well established, some commitment, or a harsh father !!
Had an old mate Ken Roberts, ( R.I.P.) who drove for them during the day, and at night in the strawberry season, he ran a 4 wheeler from Locks Heath to London every night ,for the six or eight weeks the season was on. That was some hard work. I believe ■■■■ Swaffield also drove for them for a while, another really nice bloke. Not sure if he’s still around, or any other Clapcott drivers that will remember them.
All a long time ago !!

Hi All
Trying again with pics . We did`nt do Containers all the time , pics show Dave Jacks with my MAN in front around 86 .

Frenchy

Looking at the chap standing by the 2nd M.A.N ,He looks like he’s seeing if the coast is clear before taking a leek!
Anyway thanks to ainacs for the info on the pics I posted, that was a nice line up of E.F.Phillips wagons, heres another of theirs

Cheers Marc.

A sad day today Pat,lets try to brighten it up with a few pics from yesteryear.

A V8 mandator of Lanes.no info on this as I had the pic given to me.

Bakers M.A.N, With a column change if I’m not mistaken.

Osbornes Fiat

A cutting from a mag
Cheers Marc.

Well done Marc another few great pics.

This pic is outside of Princes old place along Millbrook Road when they were AEC agents. I have not got a clue who R A Lane from Totton is though! Looks brand new so would be about 1971.

This is the other of Osbornes trucks from Shelley Lane near Ower

This is one of Eric Bakers Man’s I believe that he became an agent for them after upsetting ERF, Probably a homemade trailer too!!

Mammoth was run by John Ward and had a yard in Belgrave Road Swathling Southampton near to where A E Strattons had a yard.

Regards Pat

There was a mention of Dave Moxey earlier in this post - if its the one I am thinking of he would be about 64 now. Anyone know what happened to him / Where he went?

Had a chat with John Lee and discussed the R A Lane AEC and he told me that Ken Lane of Springroad Transport’s wife was called Rose and lived in Totton so perhaps this was Ken under another name for whatever reason!!!
Can anyone else shed any light on this?

Regards Pat

Didn’t Dave work for Phillips Transport and drive a Volvo rigid and drag?
I seem to remember he was good friend of Pete Monger, not seen him for years though!

Ithink he worked with this guy Les Parnell

Regards Pat

Thanks Pat.

I know he worked for Verwood Engineering which later changed to Hudson & Brown Transport in the late sixties.

You mention Les Parnell, is he on here?

I may start a new thread to help find Dave.

Hi I had a visit from Paddy “Sandals” Keoghan today he was waiting for his DHL Mercedes Truck to be repaired at Nursling, so he walked around to the yard he sends his best regards to all and said he will bring some pics in.

Health and safety have caught up with poor old Paddy though he has to wear safety steel toecap boots now

Regards Pat

Hi Pat

I,m surprised Paddy got away with wearing those sandals of his for so long especially working for DHL

Mick Hennessy has been mentioned on this thread before
I,ve just found pic of his F88 i drove for him.

Hi Tony

I remember Mick buying it from Princes, and had a little drive around the town in it just after.
He was as proud as Punch, and if I remember ,he bought it for about
£ 9000.00.
Wouldn’t buy an engine these days.

P.S. Bet you didn’t smoke in it !!! :smiling_imp:

Hi Dave,

Even though it was only a 240 it was a cracking truck & a nice looker aye. Mick had fitted a " police siren " horn on it . Had some fun with that
At the time i was honoured that Mick entrusted me with his " pride & joy
even though i only did a few trips with it before he sold it to our friends
& your ex employer Jim & Barry Squib. ( By then trading as Transport Services )
Who i later worked for.
I did smoke in cab as i always have Dave but the smell of polish overpowered the wiff of baccy
